The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of intellectual property law and its regulation in modern world. The course introduces with a general description of intellectual property law and examines various objects of intellectual property law from the point of view of various forms of creative expression (mainly - designations of goods and services, appearance of goods, inventions), and characterises infringements of intellectual property rights and their prevention. Objects of intellectual property law is characterised from the point of view of their regulation at international, regional, and national levels, with an emphasis on the EU and Latvian national regulation.

Complex performance and its evaluation

The course is one of the modules of a program “Teaching and learning for competence development” that is grounded in research-based ideas and practice. The course is intended for pedagogues representing different subject areas in comprehensive education. During course lessons, participants will have a chance to analyse different teaching situations, lesson plan examples, do methodical assignments, engage in professional experience exchange on what is the way to a complex student learning outcome and how to evaluate it. Participants will be able to practice the use and development of rubrics. In between lessons there will be an individual assignment.

Application of ground penetrating radar in various studies

The goal of the course is to provide knowledge about theoretical basis of ground-penetrating radar, shortcomings and advantages. As well as to train students so their are capable to conduct ground-penetrating radar researches and provide interpretation of obtained measurements independently. Tasks of the course, that includes acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences are: 1) provide understanding about propagation of electromagnetic waves through sediments, 2) to learn processing and interpretation of data that are obtained with ground-penetrating radar, 3) to learn planning of studies where ground-penetrating radar is used.

In 2005 the Library received a unique donation from Professor Alberts Varslavāns (1929-2010), which was a collection of miniature editions. A large part of the professor’s life was connected to the UL and In 1958 he graduated from the extramural department of the Faculty of History with excellence then, in 1963, started to work in the UL. He delivered lectures to students of the History program and held various positions: Head of the Department (1964-1968); (1984-1994), Dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy (1974-1984), Prorector of Sciences (1974-1984), corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia. The collection of small books was a hobby for A. Varslavāns and on each business trip he made he tried to find and bring home, a miniature book of each country. When collecting these books, the main consideration was not their content, but their size. The biggest value of this donation is its original format.
