The course aims to strengthen and expand students’ knowledge of German colloquial language approaching A2 Level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This course is designed to improve students’ skills in four areas: 1) reading comprehension by reading simple texts; 2) writing skills based on the development of German communicative grammar; 3) listening comprehension to understand extended conversational expressions of a partner, or other authentic records; 4) oral communication with training of pronunciation.

The objective of the specialized Latvian language course I is to improve the linguistic competence of students and their practical Latvian language skills in order to avoid widespread mistakes in modern communicative situations. The course is based on acquiring the norms of the Latvian literary language, the rules of stylistic and specialized language taking into account lexical, semantic, syntactic and interlanguage aspects. The course is designed for the students of all study programs who wish to extend their knowledge of academic writing skills to improve the quality of their professional activities.

International Trade and Arbitration Law

The goal of this course is to introduce the students with the development of international trade law, its principles and practice and dispute resolution. Students shall gain knowledge of the basic sources regulating international trade law, i.e., CISG, UNIDROIT International Commercial Principles etc. and their application in the practice. Comparative analyzes of national legal and international trade law systems are exercised during the course. Course also covers the main principles of resolving the disputes in international arbitration. The language of instruction is English.

Introduction to German Legal Terminology I

The aim of the course is to develop the students’ capability of dealing with German legal language. The course is devoted to the specific linguistic characteristics of legal language (technical terms and syntactical features such as sentences in the subjunctive) and discusses different types of legal and political texts (contracts, laws, verdicts, expert opinions and decrees). Basically, practical exercises that cover constitutional, European and civil law are offered. These exercises develop the students’ receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as productive abilities (writing of legal texts and presenting them).

Current Problems of Administrative Law

The purpose of this course is to offers students more in-depth knowledge about administrative law, focusing on practical or theoretical issues that are not clear, as well as on issues which relate to newly adopted normative regulations or legal norms which have not been reviewed in the BA programme. Lectures are discussions about timely issues, reviewing that which is already known and then continuing on with a more in-depth look at the relevant issues. Case files and court practice will be brought to bear whenever possible, thus deepening the understanding of students about specific aspects of administrative law and administrative procedure. Language of instruction is Latvian.

The objective of the course– to enhance the perfection of the professional skills of schoolmasters giving lessons of Politics and Law and while mastering theory on theoretical and topical issues of Politics and Law, adapting the educational knowledge and methods in passing lessons in this subject. Within the course framework according to the educational standards, there will be lectures passed on the contents and novelties in the subject „Politics and Law“, as well as on novelties and current issues in laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia in years 2007-2008. The attention will be particularly focused on issues covering e-democracy and e-administration, as well as on the issues covering civil society and political ethics, and morality in politics. Field training classes, guided to application of theoretical knowledge in practice, will be offered. The aim of the course is to enable students to practically use scientific knowledge in the creation of practically useful innovations and technologies, and to provide basic knowledge and skills for their implementation. Tasks of the course are: 1. To raise awareness of the importance of science and innovation in society and the skills needed for their successful implementation; 2. To learn several creative thinking and idea generation methods, as well as to practice their application in science and business; 3. To get acquainted with the business model development methodology and process, to master the formulation of a business idea about the business model process, its evaluation; 4. To learn simple methods of financial evaluation of a company or project, preparation and attraction of a finances and investments; 5. To acquire presentation skills, teamwork skills. Languages of instruction are Latvian and English.
