History of Latgalian Standard Language
Course
The objective – to prepare theoretically and methodologically students for independent research , working with the heritage of another historically developed Latvian writing tradition in the chronological order of its creation. Tasks: 1. To give a general overview of the history of the Latgalian written language in various stages of its development, starting with ancient texts. 2. To view the processes in the context of developments in Latvian writing of the Middle dialect. 3. To practice in reading and analysis of texts of different ages, successively getting acquainted with the most important monuments of Latgalian written sources and graphic solutions in them. 4. To acquire skills in seeing and analysis of the peculiarities of the language of the Latgalian written texts (phonetic, grammatical, lexical), evaluating the qualities in the context of the history of the Baltic languages. Traditions and Lifestyle of the Contemporary Middle East and North Africa
Course
The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to acquire knowledge about the role of tradition and modern lifestyle in Middle Eastern and North African society, mainly by exploring life in the Arab countries of the Middle East. The objectives of the course are: 1. to explore tradition and the 21st century. the impact of the conflict of claims on various aspects of the region's lifestyle; 2. to identify differences from the Western lifestyle in the following aspects: social inequality, family and marriage, gender, health, recreation, media and modern technologies, accessories, eating habits and religion; 3. to identify and study practical recommendations for successful life and communication in Middle Eastern and North African society in daily life, study and work, including etiquette and business etiquette. Languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

Theoretical Archaeology
Course
The aim of study course is to provide students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the theoretical archaeology as particular branch of archaeology. The tasks of the course are following: to characterise the main concepts and methods of theoretical archaeology, connections of archaeology with other sciences and meaning of archaeology in contemporary society as well as to pay attention to the significance of archaeological theory in different directions of archaeology. The course deals with the formation of theoretical archeology and its most important approaches in the 20th-21st centuries, discussing the development of archaeological thought in different periods and regions. Alongside the characterisation of directions of archaeological research, the course also focuses on research themes and current issues in archeology, including social, environmental and cognitive archeology, archaeological heritage management, and public archeology. Teaching/Learning Methodology of Chemistry I
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students with an opportunity to master basic issues of chemistry teaching/learning methodology: organisation of the study process, planning, normative documents regulating the content of the syllabus of the subject, development of the curriculum at basic education and general secondary education general level. Objectives of the study course: 1. to provide a teacher of natural sciences with the knowledge necessary for teaching the content of chemistry and to understand the organisation of chemistry teaching/learning process, 2. to develop skills to design and analyse the teaching/learning process, 3. to master basic teaching/learning issues of chemistry as a natural science study subject included in the state standards of general basic education and general secondary education at the general level.

Cultural Studies II
Course
The aim of this course is to give students an understanding of distinctive features of European and Slavonic culture. The course covers different cultural processes which have had influence on European culture. Special consideration is given to the particularity of European culture. The basis is made of historical, philosophical, religious and literary works, as well as art works, which being interpreted contribute to drawing of conclusions with regard to distinctions of the development of European culture. Course tasks: 1. To establish a basic knowledge system of Europe, which includes the world scene model, ethical and aesthetic values, verbal and non-verbal norms of public and cultural behaviour; 2. To present cultural, historical and political context; 3. With particular emphasis on the creation of a cultural entity. Language of instruction is Russian.

Gender and Religion
Course
The aim of the course is exploration of gender issues and their role in religious life. It has become integral part of theological and religious studies. Growing out of the feminist movement, contemporary gender studies is an interdisciplinary field. Tasks of the course are: based on collaboration between men and women and focussing on the research of representation and practice of gender, including within religious contexts; to deepen students’ knowledge on gender issues in the context of theological and religious studies; to assist them in forming well-motivated personal positions on these still controversial issues. The content of the seminar includes exploration of the major themes of the Christian theology with the emphasis on the gender issues as well as exploration of the development of gender studies in Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. The course is taught in Latvian and English.

Models of electromagnetism
Course
The aim of the course is to give students an idea of different electromagnetic processes and mathematical models that are used to model these processes. Tasks of the course are to: 1. become familiar with different types of electromagnetic processes which appear in various engineering problems; 2. learn approximations and equation systems that are used for mathematical modeling of these electromagnetic processes; 3. learn how to define boundary conditions necessary to solve the electromagnetic problems in question; 4. learn how to use 2D finite element program package “FEMM” to perform numerical simulations of electromagnetic problems; 5. gain experience by performing calculations in practical work assignments with the process models discussed in the lectures and analyzing the obtained results. Languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

Applied Signal Analysis
Course
Signal analysis is traditionally one of the compulsory courses in electronics engineering study programs, but the methods used in this discipline are also directly applicable in physics and other natural sciences. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about the applications of signal analysis in the measurements of physical quantities and data processing. Upon completion of the course, students will gain practical experience in the use of signal properties in experimental research or the development of new equipment. Tasks of the course: to acquire mathematical background for description of analog and digital signals in frequency domain, to master practical techniques for computer simulation and processing of signals, to gain practical experience in processing physical measurement data, to learn various techniques for improving measurements using filters and other signal processing techniques. The course language is Latvian.

The goal of the course is to support the development of research competence: ability to search and analyse scientific literature and develop the bibliography for master thesis in educational sciences. During the study course students will develop the competence to work with the scientific literature, search for information in scientific data bases, carry on systematic literature review, develop the bibliography and start to work on development of master thesis. Objectives - 1. To develop researching competence. 2. To develop the skill to work with scientific literature and prepare the bibliography. 3. To develop the skill to work in scientific data bases. 4. To develop the skill to carry on sistematic literature review. 5. To start developing the research plan, research structure for master thesis. Language of master’s thesis: Latvian or English.

The aim of the course is to develop the professional competence of the teacher of literature in connection with Latvian literature and the most important tendencies of its development from the 16th to 1940s. Tasks of this study course: 1. To provide knowledge and improve understanding of Latvian literaturary process in the context of the political and cultural situation; 2. To provide knowledge and understanding of the most important writers and their literary works; 3. To improve the skills of literary text analysis by and interpretation. 4. To improve and develop students' instrumental, interpersonal and systemic competences by independently applying knowledge in practice, linking it with the content of literary studies, in group discussions, evaluating, comparing and creatively using the acquired analytical text interpretation skills, and independently carrying out research work.
