The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills in translating various Turkish texts. The selected texts are related to current contemporary topics and events in politics, culture, education and other fields. Texts of literary and legal content will also be reviewed and analyzed, thus applying the student's knowledge to any field. During the course, the most important translation techniques and problems encountered when translating texts from and into Turkish will be discussed. The lessons are planned as practical exercises and seminars. The objectives of the course are: 1) to analyze texts both according to their grammatical structure and according to their content and style; 2) to see the language differences between Turkish and Latvian and English, as well as the peculiarities of text translation; 3) to analyze the message of the first language and to substantiate one's translation solutions using the appropriate metalanguage, applying the applied theory; 4) to learn new

The aim of the course is to give a clear idea of the interrelationships of materials, material use in technology, material structure and properties, using simplified notions of classical physics (without quantum mechanics). In the process of achieving the goal students are motivated to delve into the problems of materials science, emphasizing their importance in solving problems (space, national defense, nano materials, ecology). Course
The aim of the practice is to acquire the professional skills and abilities of the physicist in a real professional activity in a suitable environment for practice purposes. The tasks of the practice are: 1. To get acquainted with the work organization in the specific workplace; 2. To train the ability to work in a team, performing team work; 3. To apply the skills acquired in studies in solving problems of modern physics in academic research, education or applied applications of physics; 4. To train problem solving skills, communication skills, IT skills; 5. To develop competence related to analytical and research skills, as well as ethical conduct. Practice takes place in companies, organizations and institutions with which the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometrics of the University of Latvia has a practice agreement. During the practice, students of the Bachelor's degree program in Physics have the opportunity to apply the acquired skills in studies of physics

Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students with knowledge about the visual system’s macro- and microscopic structure, the specific interconnections between its structure, formation and functions, and the antenatal development of basic elements, the biochemical structure, metabolism and physiologic functions of eye tissues with a special emphasis on their clinical aspects.
The objectives of the study course are following:
  • to provide the detailed knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the human eye, its ocular adnexa and visual pathways;
  • to provide knowledge about composition and properties of different eye structures as well as importance of these structures in maintaining the visual processes;
  • to teach to detect and describe structures of the eye and its adnexa in a normal functional condition, and general changes in eye structures in case of various diseases.

International Human Rights Standards in the Baltic States

The course provides an opportunity to study the basics of the international human rights law and the implementation of the international human rights standards in the Baltic States. At the beginning of the course there will be an introduction in the basics of international law and human rights law, models of interrelation between the national and international law in order to facilitate the better understanding of the course for those students who do not have a legal background. The course comprises the study of the international human rights protection system and the main United Nations human rights treaties. This is followed by the analysis of the human rights protection system established in Europe and its impact on the development of human rights in the Baltic States. The goal of the course is to give knowledge about functions of the human organism on molecular level, to characterize mechanisms of hormonal regulation, to give insight on peculiarities of metabolism in different organ and tissue metabolism, to familiarize with problems of biochemistry of utmost medical importance. The course forms a basis and gives preliminary knowledge for mastering of molecular biology and genetics courses. Main biochemical processes in human organism will be explained to the students. Molecular basis of functioning of tissues and organs (digestion, blood, kidneys, liver, nerve tissue, connective tissue, muscles) will be also reviewed. Role of vitamins in maintenance of normal metabolism will be given in detail. Special attention will be paid to structure and molecular mechanisms of action of hormones. he aim of the course is to give students of the master’s program in philosophy the opportunity to systematically acquire the literature necessary for writing the master’s thesis, engage in scholarship, strengthen one’s knowledge about the principles of elaborating academic works, as well as acquire skills, knowledge and competences that serve as a basis for specialisation in a selected subfield or tradition of philosophy. The tasks of the course: 1. Strengthen one’s knowledge about the specificity of academic work in philosophy, its methods and principles, as well as improve scientific work skills. 2. Further master’s thesis project development: formulate a clear statement of the research topic, compile bibliography, determine the aim, main tasks and the overall structure of the thesis, discuss issues with academic writing. 3. Promote acquisition of the literature relevant to the topic of the master’s thesis, writing of a survey of the literature and a chapter of the thesis

The goal of the course is to learn server-side web technologies. The course provides an overview to the history of web programming and examines the fundamental web site development technologies – server side scripts, data bases, web server configurations. The popular technologies are included in the course – PHP scripting language, MySQL database engine and Apache web server. In the practical part of the course, students develop a simple web site by creating both the client side interface, and the server side scripts. The work is carried out individually or in small teams. The development simplifies digesting of the theoretical part of the course by getting to know the practical principles of web development. Tasks of the study course: 1. To acquire knowledge about server-side web technologies. 2. To learn to develop a web application in practice, using both server and client side web technologies. The language of instruction of the course is Latvian and English.
