Drug Metabolism
Course
The aim of the course is to study drug metabolism and elimination from the human body as a part of the ADME (adsorption, biodistribution, metabolism, and elimination) pharmacokinetic process. The tasks of the course are to learn about the biotransformation pathways according to the detoxification mechanism classification into phase I and phase II reactions. Another task will be to clarify the drug metabolism variability between individuals that is caused by the differences in drug-metabolizing protein, drug-receptor, and transport protein genes. Clinically significant examples of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics will be presented. Moreover, drug and metabolite influence on the environment will be discussed using polychlorinated bisphenol (PCB) accumulation in the food chain as an example. Students will be introduced to drug environmental assessment (ERA) guidelines. Latvian is the course language.
