Medieval Castles of Latvia: Functions and Research Agenda
Course
The study course is dedicated to the small, but important part of Latvia heritage - medieval castles that had appeared in Livonia since the 12th century, while from the 18th century onwards they are increasingly attracting the attention of researchers from different sectors. The aim of the course is to provide overview of issues related to the history and research of castles and to promote the students' research skills by using and comparing the primary sources from different research fields (including archaeology, history, architecture, art, paleoenvironment etc). The objectives of the course are following: to characterize the formation and meaning of the castle in medieval society and its functions in later times, to analyze and compare the historical evidences and research approaches in studies of the stone castles, as well as to develop an understanding of the value and importance of the medieval castles in contemporary society. The language of course instruction is Latvian.

Discrete mathematics for computing
Course
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the basic mathematical notions which are not dependant on the notions of limit and continuity, and are at the mathematical foundations of computing and to help acquire the basic skills in their usage. The course tasks are: to learn the basics of mathematical logics (propositions, predicates, quantifiers, normal forms, mathematical induction), set theory (sets, correspondences, mappings, binary relations), modular arithmetics, combinatorics (graphs, rules of sum and product, sieve and pigeonhole principles, the most common types of selections and their numbers), probability theory (event algebra, classical and statistical definitions of probability function, probability axioms, rules of sum and product, sieve principle, conditional probability and independence of events), to develop skills in solving the simplest problems in these areas, to learn to recognize which notions are applicable in a solution of the particular problem

Aim of the course: to provide academic knowledge and practical skills in IT project management Course tasks: 1. To develop students' understanding of the most important concepts, methods, tools of IT project management. 2. To develop practical skills of creating IT project management documentation. 3. To promote the application of the acquired academic knowledge and practical skills in team work. The theoretical part of the course deals with project management approaches, tools and methods, with special emphasis on the specifics of IT projects. The training is based on the project management standard developed by the Project Management Institute (http://www.pmi.org) and compiled in the "Project Management Book of Knowledge" (PMBOK). In the practical part of the course, using the knowledge gained in the theoretical part of the course, team work skills are developed and basic skills in project management are acquired. The course is offered in: Latvian, English.

Communication in Social Work

The aim of the study course is to provide an opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge of the principles and techniques of communication with clients in social work and to develop skills in advising clients within the framework of work with cases. Tasks of the course is to provide a theoretical insight into communication psychology in the context of social work; 2) to acquaint with the peculiarities of communication in social work with different clients; 3) to ensure the acquisition of counseling skills, paying special attention to listening, conversation, discussion and conflict resolution skills;4) to analyze communication with the client (also “difficult client” and aggressive client), paying attention to the role of attitude in a successful networking, client service ethics and social worker safety issues. At the end of study course students make professional communication with clients and use different technics of consulting. The course is lead in Latvian.

Within the course basics of water supply technologies, wastewater treatment principles, approaches used for the remediation of contaminated environment, purification of exhaust gases is analysed. Integrated approach to environmental protection is developed based on the best available technical solutions and environmental policy. The aim of the study course includes: 1. The course aims to promote the development of student communication skills based on an example of psychological aspects of advertising activity, to present basic principles of advertising psychology, research methods in psychology and the historical context of science. Learn an audience analysis from the perspective of individuals' motivation, perceptions and social interaction. Using theoretical knowledge, analyse the specificities of perception processes and how they can create an advertising message and understand the social and ethical aspects of advertising activity. Study-course tasks: presenting the methods and results of various psychology studies in the advertising field, taking into account the changes in advertising activity related to digitisation and media development, describing mechanisms and their effectiveness, promoting the development of presentation skills, and enabling an in-depth understanding of the impact of advertising on culture, its potential opportunity

The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of basic knowledge, which gives the opportunity to teach the basics of tennis theory and technique. To improve knowledge about the need for exercises, technical performance, as well as dosage. To draw attention to the influence of various additional factors on the general understanding of the essence of tennis. Tasks: 1. To acquaint with theoretical knowledge about tennis methodology, tennis ethics, tennis diversity (tennis, mini tennis, beach tennis, trolley tennis), technical classification, movement biomechanics, teaching methodology, doping and injury prevention; 2. To improve pedagogical skills in organizing and managing the training process; 3. To promote a common understanding of the way of life related to tennis; 4. To develop the level of students' tennis games, at the same time paying attention to the correct execution of shots and dosage of exercises. The course is delivered in Latvian.

Introduction to the anthropology of performance
Course
The aim of the course is to examine various aspects related to performance, such as identity, representation, appropriation etc. The tasks of the course are to acquire knowledge about the performance and performativity and learn skills to apply this knowledge in research. Students will read the texts of V. Turner, R. Konkurgood, T. Nyong'o, J. Roch and other authors, who have applied a performance-based approach to their research and/or have theoretically conceptualized performance or performativity. Performance (or performativity) studies also allow to discover how people present their personal (ethnic, gender, racial, etc.) identities in the public and private spheres and what meanings they attach to this performance. The course also covers understanding of the nature of performance and the role of the audience in society and culture. The course is taught in Latvian and English languages.
