Introduction to the Economic Geography
Course
Objectives of course are learning methods and applications of research in the economic geography. The goal will be achieved by implementing the following course tasks: 1. acquiring knowledge about the processes and regularities of economic geography, 2. performing in practical work, using various methods and forms of data processing, analysis and presentation of the obtained results, 3. learning the scientific terminology of economic geography in foreign languages, 4. carrying out ongoing practical and research work. Economic Geography introduces students to economic geography content and the main research directions, location theories and basic laws, economic geography reveal their main concepts and patterns, as well as analysis of their worlld economic geography and economic geography of the world regions. The course is taught in Latvian.

Design history II
Course
Chronologically arranged course of lectures and seminars which introduces history of the material culture – parallels in development of scientific and technical discoveries and achievements and their influence on decorative applied art and similar fields which framed the developing of design. Within a framework of this study course theoretical and philosophical justifications of the main categories linked with Design concepts (style, function, form, image, etc.) are considered. To gain a sense of design’s multiple forms of expression and their links with side branches and overview of the world’s most outstanding designers’ works is provided. The aim of the study course is to develop visual thinking skills and analytical approach in perceptivity of the environment; to form students’ taste and comprehension in things, processes and depictions in artistic forms.

The aim of the course is for students to develop an understanding of the sociopolitical and economic importance of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Singapore, their relationship with Mainland China and the contemporary geopolitical dynamics. The objectives of this course are: 1. to provide an introduction to Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Singapore: diverse sociopolitical entities sharing a common cultural heritage yet different in their political status; 2. to look at the economic and political relations between them and the recent rise of Mainland China in the international arena, such as the vital role of Hong Kong or the manufacturing capacity of Taiwan to China’s economic development; 3. to explore the impact of them in the shaping of political-economic dynamics, both in the Asian region and in the international community. The course focuses on the formation of the cultural landscape of the Baltic Sea region (focusing on the territory of the Baltic States, Finland and Sweden) and its most characteristic elements, emphasizing the impact of various historical processes and events on the cultural environment and its dynamic changes. The aim of the course is to describe the development of the cultural landscape in the Baltic Sea region in different historical eras, as well as to promote students' understanding of the importance of the cultural environment in modern society. The tasks of the course are as follows: 1. to describe the elements of the cultural landscape, their development and significance in the space of the Baltic Sea region; 2. to follow the changes in the cultural landscape of the Baltic region over the centuries; 3. to analyze the forms of landscape and society interactions. The Years of Change. Third Awakening: Origins, Evolution and Results
Course
The objective of the course is to provide students with an opportunity for in-depth studies of the origin and evolution of the Third Awakening in Latvia in the Baltic and international context. The tasks of the course are to analyze also the preconditions of Awakening, the progress of awakening processes, the development of the domestic policy goals and foreign policy concept of the of the Latvia's Popular Front and the restored Republic of Latvia during the awakening period. The preconditions for the awakening of the people of Latvia developed gradually, new generation had emerged during the years of the Soviet regime, which rejected the lies of the Soviet ideology. The course is intended to examine and analyze the sources about the development of transformation in the 1960s -1980s as well as historical sources created during the Awakening period The language of instruction is Latvian.

Annotation of the study course: The aim of the course is to provide students with an insight as well as the necessary knowledge, skills and competences in the development and practical application of public relations strategy and tactics. Tasks of the study course: - Explain the relationship between public relations strategies and tactics and organizational, business, business and / or communication problems or communication challenges, outline public relations as a function of corporate governance, - Provide insight into public relations activities, methods, planning principles, tools, forms of activities, - Provide information on the role and opportunities of public relations in various business and operational areas (eg public administration, business, non-governmental organizations), - To provide information on the basics of public relations project management and ethics. The language of instruction is Latvian.

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic structures and characteristic elements of medieval culture that have formed the basis for creation of the political and cultural region of Europe. The course marks the key hallmarks in the development of medieval culture and history by focusing on the basic orientations and historical roots of culture formation. Thus in the introduction of the course a special emphasis is placed on the Roman heritage entrenched in the medieval culture. The course elucidates on the meaning of Christianity as a factor that unifies and forms the society and culture in the historical medieval evolution. The course provides an insight to the characteristic forms of the medieval practical and spiritual life. The course is particulary topical in the context of formation of the European Union and Latvia’s integration into the EU. Illustrative materials are widely used in the course.

Research Paper II
Course
The aim of the Research paper II is to create an understanding of the prerequisites for the development of scientific work, i.e., the study and application of theoretical knowledge, academic skills and abilities of scientific work in accordance with the requirements of the Bachelor's study program. Research paper can be developed in the study courses included in the A part (compulsory part) or part B part (optional) of the study plan for the second year students (third or fourth semester). This study course is prepared to respect the task of the legislator to include the Civil Defense course in the study plans. Tasks - to develop research skills and competences, as well as to teach work with legal sources, to improve the legal language and techniques of articles, to work independently and draw conclusions. The language of the course is Latvian.

The aim of the study course is to learn the basics of mathematics, which allows to describe both the model of the eye and the light flows through the surface of the eye. The main researched or analysed objects of mathematical analysis are functions. The course covers the following core themes: real number, differential calculus and integral calculus.
The objectives of the study course are following:
  • to introduce students with the above-mentioned topics;
  • to introduce with topics, which is oriented to the ability to read modern scientific literature in optometry using mathematics technique.
