International Environmental Law
Course
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of international environmental law. The course starts with a general discourse on the functions of law and how can law be employed to address global and regional environmental problems. A special emphasis is placed the relationship of environmental law and environmental ethics. Then students learn basics on sources of international law and explore how these sources apply to the protection of environment. This general introduction is followed by a more detailed analysis of particular areas such as climate change, biodiversity, water law, high seas fisheries, state responsibility and other topical issues. The emphasis in this course is placed on interactive study methods e.g., active student engagement via teamwork, discussions and student presentations.

The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge on options for combating crime regardless of the borders of the countries. In learning the national and international legal provisions regulating criminal procedure activities within the framework of international cooperation to understand the theoretical grounds of this cooperation and to know how to qualitatively apply these provisions in practice.

Legal aspects of staff management

The aim of this course is to improve master student’s knowledge of legal regulations, governing employment, promoting deeper understanding of legal aspects of employment relationships in private and public sector and of the differences between these sectors. The task of the course is to promote understanding of principles, governing employment in a constitutional state, importance of employment to economic and social progress of the state as well as to improve the legal environment for entrepreneurship. Students acquire the skills to apply the legal norms regulating employment relations, interpreting them in accordance with the principles of employment relations, as well as to select and analyze court decisions.

Aims of the study course are: 1) to provide students with a structured notion about the principal norms of the competition law (agreement prohibition, prohibition of using the dominant position with malicious intent, merger control), economic models used in their application and application procedure; 2) to develop students’ skills to independently identify risks of infringing competition law, assess their topicality and choose appropriate solution for preventing them; 3) to introduce the outlines of the fields related to competition law (state support, prohibition of dishonest competition, prohibition of dishonest retail practice) and typical application situations.

The scientific work of ISSP UL is closely related to the training of students - physicists at the UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry (FMOF). From September 1, 2002, the "Department of Physics of Solids and Materials", which is part of the Physics Department of UL FMOF, operates in the institute. The first head of the department - doc. J. Harja. The department provides training courses in the field of solid state and material physics, promotes the cooperation of the Physics Department of the UL FMOF with the ISSP UL as a basis for the scientific work of students and teachers. Every year, about one-third of the students of the Physics Department of the UL FMOF develop their bachelor's and master's theses in the scientific laboratories of the ISSP UL. Course paper is an integral part of the Political science BA programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Latvia. It is the first attempt of students to complete a relatively long research paper independently, and it sets the stage for later similar research papers and eventually the undergraduate dissertation. The aim of the course paper assignment is to develop students' independent research skills. Students fulfil a number of tasks while completing the course paper assignment. Students acquire in-depth understanding of at least one political science subfield: political theory, comparative politics, public administration, and international politics. Also, students learn to analyze specific political problems and use methods. Each students is assigned a supervisor. A course paper turns into a complete, independent, scientifically oriented study of a specific political problem or event selected in the field of specialization. This is done by a carefully planning one
