The annual Days of Chemists is the most important event of the year at the UL Faculty of Chemistry, which runs for a week and is attended by about 400 students of the faculty. During the week, various events take place – games, orienteering competitions, erudition competition, demonstrations of experiments, concluded by a ball.

Elvīra Palavs (1912–2000) (née Miezis) was born on 31 August 1912 in Brenguļi, Latvia. As a refugee, she settled in Australia and was an active public figure among the Latvians in Australia and one of the founders of the Sydney Latvian Society. Elvīra Palaus died on 6 November2000, leaving to the Sydney Latvian Society 250000 Australian dollars in her will, to be distributed among gifted Latvian students who often face material difficulties on their way to higher education. In 2003, Elvīra Palavs’ Scholarship was announced for the first time. In total, it was granted to 12 Latvian students. The applications were reviewed by taking into account academic results, family and material status and determination to support the Latvian national spirit and self-confidence. The aim of the study course is to perfect the research competence of doctoral students and to contribute to innovative activities in the education sciences by encouraging creativity of doctoral students in order to promote the quality of preschool and primary school education. During the course, the doctoral student develops, approbates and presents a product topical to the educational environment of pre-school and primary school education, for solving the challenges initiated by educational practice. Two scientific practical seminars (16 hours each) take place within the framework of the study course, during which doctoral students work on the development, approbation and presentation of a product significant for solving the challenges of educational practice. Content of The Character Curriculum

There is an introductory module, aimed at KS2, on the philosophy of virtue ethics, which gives students the vocabulary of virtue and an understanding of the process of virtue development. This module explains the philosophical underpinning of the curriculum’s approach to character education. Subsequent lessons, which focus on topics, fall under four broad headings: flourishing individuals, flourishing relationships, digital flourishing and flourishing societies. Examples of the topics that appear under each heading are shown below. Many of the topics, including families and friendships, are introduced in KS1 and re-visited in KS2. Within each topic, for example friendship, students have the opportunity to use a range of tools to reflect on their character. 24 February 2022 saw emergence of a new geopolitical situation that disrupted peace on a global scale. UL strongly advocates world peace, supporting Ukrainian students and researchers. The University of Latvia Strategy 2020–2027 formulates the direction towards sustainable governance, ensuring continuous improvement of the quality management system, including implementing integrated strategic management, risk management and process management. The leadership of UL follows the principles of good governance, involving students and employees in higher decision-making institutions, such as the UL Senate and its commissions. Student self-governments are active in the UL faculties, nominating their candidates for election to the UL Student Council (ULSC). ULSC is an independent, collegial institution elected for the term of one year to represent the rights and interests of students at the University of Latvia.
