The aim of the course “French” (for levels from 1 to 4) is to allow the students to acquire a sufficient level of French to communicate in ordinary situations of social and professional life. This set of these courses represents about 200 hours of teaching and corresponds to a half of the „Independent Speaker” level (“Treshold”) established by Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The goal of the course „French 1” is to provide the conversational French language skills for everyday and concrete professional situations, by acquiring reading and writing skills (learning pronunciation rules and the basics of the grammar) and by developing listening and speaking skills (understanding the lecturer and audio records, introducing him/herself and others, asking and answering simple questions). The various teaching methods that are used during the classes ensuring the perfection of the language skills.

Introduction to History of Diplomacy (1648 -1918)

The course deals with the main problems of diplomacy in Europe since The Thirty Years War till the end of the WWI and with the main problems in historiography, but also includes a short introduction into the history of diplomacy in ancient Greece, Roman Empire and Byzantium. The role of the diplomacy of Venice, Florence and Milan, as well as the quest for hegemony in Europe by Hapsburgs in 15 century receices its due, too. Course deals with the definition of diplomacy as a craft, art and science. Course covers the main problems of the history of diplomacy of France, Prussia, German Empire, Hapsburg's Empire (later - Austria, later - Austria - Hungary), Otoman Empire, Russia, USA. Students study the life of the greatest diplomats: Richelie, Talleyrand, Caslrey, Palmerston, Bismarck, Gorchakov, Grey, as well as the modern tendencies in the historiography.

From 27-28 September, researchers Laura Kadile and Marina Loseviča will present their research results at the international conference "One Health: A systemic approach to managing urban and natural resources" in Catania, Italy. The results of the study will be presented in the framework of the 3rd section of the conference: "One health as part of adaptation and human rights". Researchers will present a report on:"Healthcare quality indicators as a tool for safeguarding patient with limited capacity and physician rights". The aim of the conference is to foster collaboration between researchers, experts and students in order to activate synergistic dialogues between disciplinary research areas and fields of activity. The conceptual framework of One Health and the potential contribution of the One Health approach will be at the centre of the conference dialogues. The course is one of the modules of the program “ Multi-level STEM acquisition in primary school (1st-6th grades)”. First steps in robotics by using Lego Mindstorms EV3, which is based on practice and research-based insights. The aim of the course is to expand participants' knowledge and understanding of how learning about robotics in primary school helps the student to develop various skills (for example, creating a strategy , algorithmic thinking, etc.) and habits (communicate about what is created, test it, etc.) by using the engineering design cycle. In the classes, teachers will have the opportunity to analyze different learning situations and teaching materials as well as discuss about them, exchange their experience, and additionally practically play out different situations where the engineering design cycle must be implemented.

The main objective of the course is to explain the concepts of urban regeneration and integrated urban development and to describe the specific processes, methods and instruments related to these. The teaching methods will include lectures, seminars, debates and workshops. The module will include theoretical and practical activities and will be mostly interactive. A number of best practices in the field will be analysed, especially based on the last 2 decades of European experience and projects will be developed for selected areas of intervention from Riga, Copenhagen and other cities. By the end of the course the students will get an adequate understanding and the capabilities to develop integrated projects and urban regeneration strategies. Communication skills and team working in international and interdisciplinary surroundings will also be developed during the course practical teaching sessions. The course goal is to form and to develop the basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French which are necessary for communication in everyday situations as well as in professional context. The course provides basic knowledge in phonetics, the vocabulary and grammar elements that are essential for primary communication focusing on the learners communicative competence (linguistic, socio-cultural and learning competence). All the class activities are based on practical real life situations so that the students can become active participants in learning process. All the lessons have joint approach: 1) reading/listening of the document (text, dialogue), 2) verification of understanding, 3) memorization, 4) communication, 5) consolidation of knowledge. This course corresponds to beginner level (A1 - „Breakthrough”) of the Common European framework for language learning.
