Ophthalmic optics II
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide knowledge and skills on the use of different types of vision correction in vision specialists’ practice.
The objectives of the study course are the following:
  • to demonstrate the optical and physical basic of bifocal and progressive lenses, their application in the correction of presbyopia;
  • to give knowledge about the prescription and mounting of these lenses and to learn the causes of progressive lenses non-adaptation and in problem solving;
  • to learn the optical principles of contact lenses applications and to give knowledge in contact lenses calculations on basis of patient’s refraction;
  • to learn how to use spherical and toric contact lenses for correction of ametropia using soft and gas permeable contact lens materials.

This tailored discipline-targeted English language training course seen as part of continuing professional development is intended for researchers and academic staff of different fields and is aimed at equipping them with the English language support sufficient for improving their scientific capacity to communicate effectively in accurate and fluent English in multimodal situations for different purposes, including presenting reports at international conferences, writing scientific articles and lecturing. The content of the course is carefully derived from the analysis of course participant’s scientific and academic English language needs. The interactive contact modes, in which the participants’ linguistic competence and scientific and academic spoken and written communication skills are developed explicitly, are integrated with the distant individual learning modes of providing feedback on the written assignments set during the course. Cross-cultural communication in diplomacy
Course
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the significance of intecultural communication in the diplomatic work. The tasks of the course are 1) introduce students to main approaches to the intercultural communication, 2) to strenghten their skills of intercultural contact. In the contemporary global world a precondition of a successful diplomacy is acquaintance with other cultures and mentalities. On different levels of cross-cultural contacts there is a need for knowledge about the way of thinking and problem solving in other cultures. The course has been created in order to allow students to gain in-depth understanding about problems of this kind. Theoretical, practical and ethnographic problems will be treated in this course in order to understand the challenges created by the necessity to create diplomatic, commercial, informative and other contacts with representatives of different cultures. A broad range of case-studies, as well as ICT will be used in this course

It acquaints the students with the history of the place names of Latvia and their changes, the problems of their recording and investigation, the principles of standardization, the most important studies of the place names and publications. Course
The aim of the practice is to introduce students with optics business activity, dispensing optician’s duty, responsibility and cooperation with the management of optics, optometrists, opticians and researcher in visual science. The main tasks of practice are connected knowledge and skills gained during the study with its implementation in offer of optical lenses and contact lenses, fitting of contact lenses, aesthetic eyeglasses, dispensing of glasses, measuring of vision function parameters.
