With benefaction of the patron Mikrotīkls, in 2019 for the first time scholarships wereawarded to future specialists inbioinformatics – master's degree students in biology and computing, who specialize in bioinformatics and molecular biology. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary branch of science dedicated to analysis of certain biological data, as well as the development of algorithms, programmes and databases for the acquisition, storage and analysis of this data. Currently, the specialists of bioinformatics are in high demand in the labour market. Scholarships are intendedfor the University of Latvia (UL) Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Computing master’s students of the firstand secondyearswho specialize in bioinformatics or molecular biology. The programme is licensed on May 15, 2020. Admission to the programme takes place already in the study year 2020/2021. In this programme it will be possible to acquire knowledge of the organizational principles of the pedagogical process to promote learning, as well as knowledge of psychological phenomena that affect learning and what regularities must be taken into account when working in the digital environment and how to promote the development of media and digital competence. In the study process, it will be possible to discuss the legal and ethical aspects of the digital environment and model learning tasks, to acquire the necessary competencies for a technology-enriched learning process. Students will learn the basics of programming, learn how to work with educational robotics, how to use the possibilities offered by virtual reality, work with 3D printers, create websites and develop learning platforms. The aim of the course is to learn the requirements of professional ethics and the limitations set by legal norms, in order to legally and in compliance with a high culture of behavior perform work duties in the work of a lawyer.
To achieve the goal of the course, the student must gain an understanding of social values and rules of communication in society, the concept of ethics and the foundations of corporate or professional ethics, professional ethics as self-limitation of each professional and standards of behavior set by colleagues, conflict of interests in ethics and legal norms, the concept of power and the use of power in violation of the law and ethical boundaries, professional responsibility.
The aim of the course is to provide a general understanding of the medical law and their sources, as well as the importance of medical law and its practical application. The course deals with the institutional and substantive issues of medical law. Particular attention is devoted to the understanding of the regulation of medical law, the issues of legal protection of patients' rights, as well as medical personnel and medical treatment institutions. In the process of acquiring a medical law course, the method of critical thinking is used, with the analysis and application in practice of development and education of the identification of skills, such as the necessary sources of law, their search in the database of jurisprudence (www.tiesas.lv, HUDOC). The latest trends of European medical law development are also covered.
Course objectives:
1. To introduce students with principles of medical law, to form understanding of application of those principles in medical practices.

In the third study yearevery student must participate in a special seminar during the semester. The special seminar is a special class in small groups under the guidance of a lecturer. The group meets once a week, usually on Thursdays from 16:30 to 18:00. The lecturer determines the form and the content of the specific classes (lectures, practical works, analysis of articles, discussions, etc.), the procedure for assigning marks. A production specialist can also be a lecturer of a special seminar. Unlike offering an optional course, which requires considerable preparation time, starting a special seminar is very simple – a lecturer must come to the special seminar presentation class and talk about the planned special seminar in about 5 minutes. If at least 6 students apply for a specific special seminar by the end of September, it can continue until the end of the study year. We recommend starting the study process in this form. The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of intellectual property law and its regulation in modern world. The course introduces with a general description of intellectual property law and examines various objects of intellectual property law from the point of view of various forms of creative expression (mainly - designations of goods and services, appearance of goods, inventions), and characterises infringements of intellectual property rights and their prevention. Objects of intellectual property law is characterised from the point of view of their regulation at international, regional, and national levels, with an emphasis on the EU and Latvian national regulation. The course is taught either in Latvian or English depending on a student group.
The aim of the study program is to prepare highly qualified finance specialists for work in government institutions and agencies, commercial enterprises across all sectors of the economy, municipal institutions, non-governmental and international organizations. The program also helps students acquire a theoretical foundation in economics and financial management, along with the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for a professional career in finance. Finance professionals apply their knowledge to shape economic and financial policy and to address current and future economic and financial challenges. The study program enables students to understand the causal relationships and concepts of economic processes, gain theoretical knowledge and industry-specific skills, develop research abilities, foster independent economic thinking, and acquire specialized professional courses in the field. Project participants and 3 rd year Bachelor students Matīss Čakšs and Kalvis Kalniņš participated at the scientific conference 15 th International Conference on Measurement, which took place on 2–4 June 2025 in Smolenice Castle (Slovakia). The main topics discussed were: theoretical measurement problems and measurement methods and results in the fields of physics, biology and medicine. Both students presented posters on research within the framework of the Latvian Council of Science project No. lzp-2023/1-0199: • Matīss Čakšs: “Measurements of Potential Positive Ion Sources of Gadolinium”, • Kalvis Kalniņš: “Formation of LIPSS on GaAs in Water Using Vector Laser Beams”. During the conference, both participants also listened to presentations by other researchers, thus getting acquainted with other research areas and measurement methods, and also engaged in some discussions about their own and others’ research.
