The Faculty of Biology cooperates with other universities and scientific institutes both by implementing joint scientific projects and by providing students with the opportunity to develop their final theses. The faculty also cooperates with state institutions and non-governmental organisations, providing consultations, participating in the work of various councils, as well as inviting professionals to conduct individual lectures. Cooperation with entrepreneurs is carried out by conducting contract studies, developing new products. The course is one of the modules of a program “Teaching and learning for competence development” that is grounded in research-based ideas and practice. The course is intended for pedagogues representing different subject areas in comprehensive education. Upon completion of this course, participants will broaden their understanding on what kind of student learning process the result is student’s competence and how to realize such a learning process in specific classroom setting. During course lessons, participants will have a chance to analyse different teaching situations, lesson plan examples, do methodical assignments, engage in professional experience exchange on teaching and assessment possibilities that are aimed at learning for competence development. In between lessons there will be an individual assignment.

German for Academic Studies

The course is intended for students of all subjects with German language level B1/B2. Its goal is to expand their reading and listening comprehension as well as their writing and speaking skills. Most of the materials and exercises are based on students’ academic needs, complemented, however, by sources from politics, history and social life. Two representative languages will be analyzed and taught in detail with regard to their specific structure. In addition, a subject adequate communication will be practised by writing summaries, abstracts (for research papers), by talking on the phone with experts and by giving presentations. The participants are expected to contribute actively in class. The course concludes with an exam that includes questions for a listening text.

The aim of this course is to improve mentors’ knowledge (development) of the psychological aspects of peer-mentoring for first-year students, to foster mentors’ awareness of the support and guidance process, to develop the course participants’ active listening and guidance skills, with the aim to reduce the first-year students` dropout risks. Workshops will help mentors to understand the nature of peer-mentoring. It helps mentors to gain awareness of their own resources for providing mentees with guidance, to understand the importance of time management, efficacy of different styles of communication, as well as to develop peer-mentoring process management skills from the initial contact to the final sessions and feedback provision. The course is taught in Latvian.

Latvian Folklore and Literature

The course is designed to provide students with the basic background information for reading and analysing Latvian literature. Each author and each work is placed in its historical context. The course follows up the development of Latvian literature starting from its very origins in Latvian folklore, through National Awakening, during the Republic of Latvia between the two world wars, during the Soviet occupation, to contemporary writing. The course consists of lectures and discussions, paying attention to the most significant periods and authors, The students read and discuss the works of Latvian literature translated into English, linking the respective material with Latvian mentality and the concrete historical period.
