Course Paper I
Course
Course paper is an integral part of the Political science BA programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Latvia. It is the first attempt of students to complete a relatively long research paper independently, and it sets the stage for later similar research papers and eventually the undergraduate dissertation. The aim of the course paper assignment is to develop students' independent research skills. Students fulfil a number of tasks while completing the course paper assignment. Students acquire in-depth understanding of at least one political science subfield: political theory, comparative politics, public administration, and international politics. Also, students learn to analyze specific political problems and use methods. Each students is assigned a supervisor. A course paper turns into a complete, independent, scientifically oriented study of a specific political problem or event selected in the field of specialization. This is done by a carefully planning one

EU material law
Course
The aim of the course is to provide in-depth overview on EU material law and its application. In order to ensure the ability in applying material law in practice the students will be provided short repetition of the EU institutional law (the competence of the EU institutions in legislation, the place and effect of EU law in national legal systems). The course will provide overview on the main fields of the EU competence which are either directly or indirectly connected with the functioning of the internal market. The course will excel students’ skills in identifying the fields regulated by the EU law, finding applicable legal source and apply it in the context of national legal system. The methodology of the course is based on studies of EU primary and secondary legal acts as well as case-law of the Court of Justice of the ES. It also reflects on recent developments in the field of EU law.

The aim of the course is to introduce students with legal and economic aspects of competition relationships within the framework of regulation of market and management of economic activity in European Union and Latvian law; forms of regulation of competition relationships and their specific elements; liability issues for infringements of regulation of competition relationships, including peculiarities of the application of public penalties and collection of damages; analyse infringement cases of regulation of competition relationships in conjunction with applicable legal framework and court practice. The language of instruction is Latvian. The tasks of the course are to prepare the students for the ability to independently solve the questions, related to the regulations of competition relations, including the assessment, whether there is a violation of regulations of competition regulations in given circumstances, whether the merger of market players should be allowed, as well

Basics of Criminalistics
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide the students with a systematic insight into fundamentals of forensics as a science and current possibilities. Forensics is a science on identification of criminal offences in compliance with the provisions of criminal proceedings: regarding search, finding, recording, removal of items that may become evidence in criminal proceedings; on tactics of performing investigation actions (examination, interrogation, search, etc.); on investigation methods of separate types of criminal offences (murder, theft, etc.). The course characterises forensics as a system of science: the general part including the identification object, subject-matter, subjects, methods, means of forensics, and the special part including forensic technique, forensic tactics and forensic methodology. During the course, students have an opportunity to receive practical skills in performing separate investigation actions in modelled situations.

The bachelor's study programme "Computer Science"of the Faculty of Computing and the 1st level professional higher education study programme "Programming and Computer Network Administration"provides for a compulsory production internship outside the University in the spring semester of the second study year. Every year our students go on internships in approximately 60 companies. During the internship, students do not have any classes at the University, however, in parallel with the internship, students must develop a qualification paper. Formally, the internship and the qualification work are not related, but a student who is able to design the internship as qualification work will be very lucky. At the student's choice, the internship may involve either programming or computer network administration. The Faculty of Computing signs tripartite agreements with a student and an internship organisation. The agreement does not provide for any financial settlement. If an internship
