Student Deep Science Hackathon 2022

During the weekend of November 25 - 27, the Student Deep Science Hackathon took place for the fourth time. Inspired by the latest technological innovations, the students came up with creative solutions to their ideas and expanded their digital skills. After three great days, the best idea of the Hackathon won a prize of EUR 3000. The hackathon brings together talented secondary school and university students from various fields every year. A lot gets accomplished within 48 hours by joining forces in a team. The first place and the main prize of EUR 3000 provided by the Foundation of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia went to the team “Desal iT” (Aleksejs Bendins and Gunita Paidere from ISSP UL, Eduards Puišis, Matīss Kalniņš) who created an innovative method for the desalination of water - "Water desalination devise". The team "Ash Gaum" won the prize of the hackathon’s special sponsor, OX Drive, a Latvian start-up that offers car-sharing using only Tesla

The Language course is designed for students who study Latvian at UL and have completed course A1, A2 and B1.Objectives of the course include improving speaking and writing skills as well as giving a deeper insight into grammar issues. Through diverse methodological approaches, the study course envisages to extend knowledge in stylistic peculiarities of Latvian, language usage in certain study fields, fiction and mass media. The course has been developed in accordance with the set European Framework of Language. (B2 Vantage level requirements).

Purpose of the study course – to provide general paediatric and child's rights foundations for working with children in an interdisciplinary perspective. Study course assignments: 1. Ensure the skills to recognise children's developmental and health disorders. 2. To provide knowledge of the relationship of oral health problems in children to preventable childhood infections and systemic diseases. 3. To raise awareness of the fundamental principles of the rights of the child and contact with the little patient. 4.To build competence on the preconditions for the development of a healthy child and the precursence of risks/hazards in a cross-sectoral approach. The aim of the course is to help the learners function in elementary social situations, promote the acquisition of lexis and grammar necessary for everyday communication, and form a firm basis for further communication in the Latvian language in the study process and professional activities. The tasks of the course are as follows: 1) to help the learners gain knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary, phonology and syntax of the Latvian language; 2) to develop basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
