Methodology of Teaching and Learning English as a Foreign Language at Basic School

The aim of the study course is to provide students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and competences required for a teacher of English as a foreign language to work with students at basic school (grades 1-9). The objective of the study course is to help students integrate background knowledge, skills and competences in education, language teaching and learning methodology and psychology, acquiring knowledge, skills and competences in teaching and learning methodology of English as a foreign language at basic school.

The study programme provides in-depth knowledge of the policy-making process in national and international institutions and improves the skills and abilities necessary for this process. According to the students' interest, the programme offers three specialisations: “ European Public Administration ” – for students who associate their career with work in European Union or Latvian government institutions. “ International Relations ” – advances knowledge of international politics and supranational organizations, providing an excellent basis for further work in the diplomatic service or in international organizations. “ Political Theory and Comparative Politics ” – particularly useful for analysts of political processes who want to build a career in the media, think tanks, non-governmental organizations. Graduates of any specialisation can continue their studies in the doctoral programme in political science.

Practical Russian II

The aim of this course is to extend students' knowledge of Russian acquired at previous stages of teaching. Practical Russian II envisages: 1) to develop communicative skills; 2) to deepen students' knowledge of grammar; 3) to enlarge students' vocabulary; 4) to read and analyse literary and journalistic texts; 5) to develop ability to discuss; 6) to correct pronunciation mistakes; 7) to write texts of medium difficulty (fill in forms, invitation, congratulation, letter to a friend).

The course objectives are as follows: 1. To introduce students to effective teaching methods, learning strategies and approaches for general and special foreign and/or second language classrooms; 2. To develop students’ methodological competence, including the adaptation of relevant teaching methods and principles according to the set aims, objectives and competence levels; 3. To develop effective planning skills and to implement the designed teaching materials in a foreign and/or second language classroom, using examples of good practices in the field; 4. To introduce students to the principles of lesson planning and use the gained knowledge in practice; 5. To explore the approaches for developing all the language competences. Each year The FBME host about 200 incoming exchange students within different international activities and programs. Faculty has signed ERASMUS+ agreement in 26 countries with best Higher Education institutions in Europe. Also provides mobility options within Campus Europae foundation, ISEP network, Institutional bilateral agreements, ERASMUS+ world wide mobility (KA 107) and others.

Jānis Dāvis

Jānis Dāvis (1867–1959) is known as an entrepreneur who during the first independent Republic of Latvia achieved success in real estate business. He was also a publicist, educator and leader of the temperance movement. Support In 1940, Jānis Dāvis in his will, bequeathed the land and 5/6 parts of the building at Barona iela 49, Riga, to the University of Latvia to set up a housing for students who were abstainers. The part of the building now owned by the UL is about 3800 m 2 large. We greatly appreciate the generous support to education and development!
