Practical aspects of diet therapy
Course
The objective of the study course is to to give student basic knowledge on diet therapy and about it’s influence on clinical result, as well as practical aspects of diet therapy in different life stages and different clinical situations. The course is giving theoretical and practical knowledge about influence of different diets to quality of life and health prognosis. The tasks of the course are as follows: 1) to provide deepened knowledge about effect of diet therapy to metabolic systems of human; 2) to provide knowledge about evaluation of nutritional status of patients, severity of disease and data of clinical examinations; 3) to provide knowledge about creating individualised recommendations in different life stages; 4) to provide obtaining skills for creating individualised diet recommendations. The Bachelor thesis project is a work prior to developing the Bachelor's thesis, defining the aim and tasks of the research, developing the content of the thesis and creating the theoretical and research sections of the final thesis. Aim of the course: according to the orientation and theme of the study program, acquiring or supplementing a statement on an important topic or problem, which in general would promote applied or scientific contribution. Tasks of the course: To strengthen the knowledge, skills and competence of research work, as well as improve work with literature sources, at the same time improving the language and technique of reading scientific articles, skills searching information, process it and drawing conclusions. The study work is aimed at the process by which the student independently obtains data, whether they receive it from institutions or publicly available sources, arranges them, researches it with qualitative and quantitative, incl. statistical methods

Design Composition IV
Course
The aim of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of the functional and aesthetic quality of the spatial environment, design concepts and presentation, technical solutions for creating various space and plane objects, harmonization of work ideas and functions, artistic quality and innovation aspects. Tasks - 1. to study the compositions of textures (visual and tactile) and spatial forms, to combine geometric and plastic spatial objects with graphic elements, using various methods of processing paper and other materials; 2. to improve the skills of creating applied graphics and book design, to search for multimedia solutions, to create letter and image compositions, posters, book layouts and illustrations, to try various graphic design techniques and materials; 3. to study the expressive, aesthetic and philosophical conditions of color choice and use in the works of different art styles, directions and authors. The course is taught in Latvian.

Preventive Dentistry
Course
The aim of the course “Preventive dentistry” is to provide students with knowledge on means and methods for preventing/arresting main oral diseases such as dental caries, dental erosion, periodontal diseases, oral mucosal diseases, malocclusion, and oral cancer. The individual risk assessment and risk management have been shown, in recent years, to be an important aspect of preventive dentistry. Apart from certain emergency measures, any definitive dental treatment should not be provided unless preventive measures such as oral hygiene instruction, dietary advice, professional tooth cleaning, and topical fluoridation have been implemented. Information on the deleterious effects of smoking and alcohol consumption on general health and, in particular, periodontal disease and oral cancer, as well as attempts of encouraging and guiding patients for smoking cessation might become more important tasks of future dentist defining their field in a more comprehensive, medical way.

The course aims to deepen students' knowledge of emotions and feelings of cultural importance of individual personality development, stress affective phenomena of functional literacy, provide a variety of theoretical approaches to understanding emotion. Special attention to personal emotional intelligence (EQ​​) and emotional intelligence (EI), personality, self-regulatory abilities and experience in understanding the emotional experience. Practical work to acquire a variety of personal emotional states and communicative skills in research methods.

Course
The aim of this course is to demonstrate how media interact with culture and society. This course provides a systematic understanding of the main doctrines, texts and theories in the field of cultural and media and cultural studies. The course develops awareness of media from a cultural standpoint, focusing on how media practices and technologies impact cultural practices, as well as cultural and social relationships and identities. The objectives of the course are: 1. To provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the interaction of literature and culture in mass media. 2. To provide transversal skills related to the theoretical and practical skills in the fields of culture and mass media. 3. To develop the ability to analyze and collect information about the interaction between society, culture and mass media; 4. To promote the ability to critically evaluate the cultural artefacts and discuss the themes of mass media and culture studies.

The course covers 4-week training on the 5th study year of the program and is carried in the form of seminars, interactive sessions and practical exercises. The course is being led by a certified physician in the corresponding speciality at the University of Latvia's teaching bases. The aim of the course: to provide theoretical knowledge and ensure the acquisition of the necessary practical skills according to the student's choice in one of the four directions - morphology, anesthesiology and resuscitation, immunology or pediatric gastroenterology. The course is planned to acquire theoretical knowledge and skills in the chosen field, using the acquired in the diagnosis and / or treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Introduction to Probability Theory

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of probability theory. In this course first of all we will discuss the events and operations with them, the classical principle of probability calculation, de Moivre-Laplace theorems, concept of random variable and its characteristics, functions from random variables. Finally, in the end we will shortly discuss the concept of stochastic convergence, law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. Tasks 1) to provide an in-depth knowledge of the probability theory that will allow better understanding of the nature of the formulae and thus clarify this knowledge more intellectually to pupils. 2) to develop an understanding of the key concepts of probability theory. 3) to teach choosing the appropriate methods for addressing tasks and to facilitate an independent process of setting up tasks. 4) develop the skills to perform calculations by selecting appropriate programmes and tools. The course is the second stage in a three-part series targeting the study of North Germanic or Scandinavian (Swedish) and culture as relevant to the Baltic Sea region. The course is focused on geopolitical and comprehensive transnational cooperation, and as such aims at equipping students with a thorough and multifaceted knowledge in the field of humanities, thus ensuring their engagement in professional activities or further academic education. The objectives of the course are related to 1) the acquisition of Scandinavian (Swedish) language at A1.2 level (approaching A2.1 level), especially by developing the skills to communicate in Swedish on issues important for Swedish / Nordic-Baltic co-operation and historical communication; 2) the development of contrastive linguistic-analytical skills for independent reception of authentic texts; 3) the acquisition of in-depth knowledge of Swedish and Nordic history, literature and culture in the context of the Baltic languages
