What is character education?

The goal of character education is one that can be easily agreed upon – human beings who flourish. Human beings who flourish not only achieve their own potential but also live meaningfully and harmoniously in thriving communities with others. Drawing on the ancient wisdom of Aristotle, a key component of flourishing is the acquisition and development of virtues such as kindness, generosity, courage and honesty. Therefore, character education includes all explicit and implicit educational activities that help young people develop positive personal strengths called virtues. Character education is the responsibility of all adults who have contact with children and young people. In school, virtues can be caught through the culture, ethos and positive example of school staff. They can also be taught explicitly through educational experiences that equip students with the language, knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes that enable character development. Civil law internship
Course
Civil law internship is the stage of consolidation, deepening and approbation of theoretical knowledge acquired previously in the field of students' civil sciences. The duration of the practice is 9 weeks and it is organized in the first semester of the studies. The main tasks of the internship are to ensure that the student understands the normative acts that regulate the legal protection activity characteristic of the practice place, acquire the skills of a lawyer, be able to independently develop the documents of the legal sphere corresponding to the specifics (functions) of the practice place, acquire skills in the work of a lawyer with persons in civil law field. Practice organization issues are defined in the Practice Regulations of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia and the specific practice program available on the e-learning site. The course is provided in Latvian language.

Psychological and Social Aspects of the German Language
Course
Within the course framework, students will get familiarized with the functioning of language in the society, the interaction of social and language structures, as well as study the latest theoretical research in the field of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics; conduct and present their micro-research in the field of sociolinguistics. The aim of the course is to enable students to develop understanding and expand knowledge about the functioning of language in the society, the interaction of social and language structures. The objective of the course: To familiarize students with English and German sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic research methods, issues and problems, the importance of cognitive approach in understanding human language behaviour, and the analysis of linguistic material, taking into account the relationship between language, cognition and socioculture.
The language of instruction is German.

Preparing future specialists The Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia offers students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of nature and living creatures, to learn more outside of school hours by participating in the classes of the School of Young Biologists. The goal of the School of Young Biologists is to expand students' knowledge of biology, create interest in biological science, improve students' success in Olympiads, and create prerequisites for studies at the Faculty of Biology. For active and successful participation in the School of Young Biologists, high school graduates receive certificates issued by the UL FB. When submitting certificates for studying in the "Biology" bachelor's study programme of natural sciences of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw, applicants of the certificate receive an additional 20 points.

The Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art (FEPA) is the largest structural unit of the University of Latvia (UL), which contributes to the development of the most important humanities – education science and psychology – as well as the general design and interior design spheres in constant demand today. The faculty offers studies and research in education management with an emphasis on promoting leadership skills. FEPA is the largest educational and training centre for teachers and psychologists in Latvia. The faculty provides the future teachers with an opportunity to study in accordance with the concept of the "School 2030" project and continue their career in teaching at any stage of education from pre-school to secondary school. Kārlis Kaufmanis

The patron Kārlis Kaufmanis (1910 – 2003) was well-known as the oldest Latvian astronomer, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy of the Latvian extraction in the University of Minnesota (USA). K. Kaufmanis in 1939 obtained a Bachelor’s degree at the Department of Astronomy of the UL Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and in 1943 earned a Master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Latvia. Until 1944, when K. Kaufmanis had to leave Latvia as a refugee, he had worked as a teacher in the secondary schools and lyceums of Riga. K. Kaufmanis initially went to Germany, and later to the USA, where he spent his entire working life as a professor in various universities. The main of them was the University of Minnesota, where over 17 years K.Kaufmanishad delivered astronomy lectures to approximately 300000 students. K.Kaufmanis won recognition and acclaim in the USA and global academic and scientific community with his lecture on the Star of Bethlehem, in which he explained
