6-th March 2019 the partners of the ERDF funded project "Crypthecodinium cohnii and Zymomonas mobilis syntrophy for production of omega 3 fatty acid from byproducts of biofuel and sugar industry". The project starts 1-st April 2019 and is a collaboration of our institute with the Institute of Wood Chemistry and JSC "Biotehniskais Centrs".

A mission of industrial biotechnology is to produce valuable products from waste. The aim of the project is to establish a bioprocess of syntrophic co-cultivation of two microorganisms (Crypthecodinium cohnii and Zymomonas mobilis) at laboratory prototype level for bioconversion of renewables (molasses, the byproduct of sugar industry, and glycerol, byproduct of biodiesel production) into valuable vegetarian (produced by microorganisms) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from omega 3 fatty acid family. DHA is essential for health of infants and adults.
