On June 12, 2024, the Green Hexagon program concluded with a spectacular Demo Day, where the MossHub team from Latvia won the top prize of €5000. The international jury was most impressed by MossHub's innovative initiative in the field of nature-based eco-technologies, focusing on the cultivation and use of moss tiles. In the Demo day 15 outstanding startup projects competed for the top prize, from the esteemed partner universities: University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, University of Latvia, and University of Tartu.

After receiving the award, the MossHub team shared their feelings and emotions about the Green Hexagon: “Green Hexagon has been an intensive and valuable program for us. In a few months, we gained extensive knowledge and developed our product, business model, and go-to-market strategy. We also prepared for our pilot, and now we are in the final steps. The Green Hexagon award will play an important role in its execution. The most valuable aspects for us were the courses on the EU Green Deal, pitching preparations, and meetings with real business angels. With every step, we validated that we are working towards something real and impactful. Thank you for this experience, and we hope our journey inspires others!”

Founders Juta Kārkliņa and Edgars Kārkliņš, Ecotechnologies Masters students from the Riga Technical University Liepaja, along with their valuable teammates from LU, biologists Liene Strazdiņa and Rolands Ratfelders, have been working on MossHub since November 2023. Currently, they are approaching the pilot stage, developing innovative moss tiles grown in a controlled greenhouse environment that provide optimal conditions for the development and sustainability of moss, highlighting a groundbreaking approach to eco-innovation. Edgars and Juta are now in France for an internship to conduct scientific validation of MossHub technology.

We also congratulate the second and third prize winners, teams EasyFlat (Austria; an app that intuitively simplifies the experience in shared flat) and Green Glazz (Czechia, addresses the disconnection from nature by offering "mechariums," small ecosystems that bring nature into homes, along with educational materials to promote sustainable care and understanding of these miniature habitats). Both teams will receive significant PR boosts, acknowledging their innovative contributions to the field.

The aspiring entrepreneurs presented their projects and progress to a distinguished international jury. The Demo Day jury included Imants Krēziņš, Chairman of the Board, mentor, and lecturer at Otisar; Mario Kwas, Head of the MSc Entrepreneurship & Applied Management program at the University of Science in Vienna; Petr Kopeček, CzechInvest's Director of Startup Acceleration; and Tarmo Virki, an experienced media professional and entrepreneur.

The Green Hexagon pre-incubation program was a 4-month online initiative that provided support for developing green ideas through guidance from international experts and mentors. A key event was the Green Hexagon Bootcamp, held in Riga this year, which brought together 58 participants. During the program, participants attended marketing-themed workshops and lectures on business creation and investor outreach.

Throughout the program, we provided invaluable support and guidance to these exceptional startups, witnessing their passion and dedication to creating a sustainable impact. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the projects for taking significant strides toward innovation and sustainability.

The Green Hexagon team is grateful for the time and effort of all participants throughout the program!
