The University of Latvia (UL) has obtained the highest results in the internationally recognized Emerging Europe and Central Asia University Rankings 2022, taking the 40th place. UL has improved the result according to several indicators, including the number and citation of scientific publications and international research network.

The rankings are based on several indicators, the most important of which are the global academic reputation, the university's reputation among employers, as well as the number of published papers and their citation, the faculty/student ratio, the proportion of lecturers holding PhD, as well as the proportion of international students and teachers. These indicators are quite demanding and therefore these rankings are highly acknowledged, as those indicators that are often subjective and depend on presentation are excluded from assessment.

Overall, the results of UL have improved according to four indicators – “Papers per faculty”, “Citations per paper”, “International research network”, and “Employer reputation”. UL repeatedly takes the 1st place in assessment according to the indicator “Staff with a PhD”.

“For the third consecutive year, in these rankings UL firmly stands at the top position amongst the higher education institutions of Latvia. This testifies that we are taking the right path of growth and that the University’s development strategy of our choice enables us to achieve ever better positions among the universities. We are particularly satisfied with the results regarding scientific publications and citations. This shows that UL is able to offer researchers a compelling work and research environment, giving them the opportunity to present their findings and conclusions to the international scientific community, and the scientists from other countries can advance their research based on the data shared by our researchers. This is clearly demonstrated by the citation indicators,” thus the results of the rating are assessed by Vice-Rector of UL Valdis Segliņš.

QS University Rankings is positioned amongst the world's most influential and well-known university rankings. A total of 451 universities in the region are rated, 60 of which have been included in the list for the first time.
