The University of Latvia has taken the 201st–300th place in “Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021” and is ranked amongst the world's TOP 200 universities according to three Sustainable Development Goals.

The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings assess the impact of universities on society according to their contribution to achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These results allow to appreciate the contribution of universities which is not assessed in any other rankings.

The University of Latvia excels in categories “Decent Work and Economic Growth” (101st–200th place), “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” (101st–200th place), as well as “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” (101st–200th place).

“These results confirm that the University of Latvia distinctively implements the provision enshrined in its Constitution, stating that “Successful activity of the UL is a guarantee for development of Latvia”. The rankings attest to the fact that while constantly improving the quality of the study process and intensifying scientific activities, the University of Latvia also makes a great contribution to the sustainable development of Latvia and society as a whole,” notes Jānis Stonis, Director of Institutional Research Programme at the University of Latvia.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are formulated, as follows: No Poverty; Zero Hunger; Good Health and Well-Being; Quality Education; Gender Equality; Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Reduced Inequality; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; Life on Land; Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; and Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.

Latvia is represented in these rankings by the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Riga Stradiņš University, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies and Liepaja University. The University of Manchester (the UK) ranks first in the rankings, followed by the University of Sydney (Australia) ranking the second, while RMIT University (Australia) ranks the third.

The results have been released on April 21, 2021.
