Professor Vitauts Tamužs of the University of Latvia (UL) passed away last year and in his will he has left 5,000 EUR to support young researchers in the field of materials science. In order to promote and support the research of Latvian scientists in the mechanics of composite materials, the University of Latvia establishes the Prize named after Vitauts Tamužs for the best annual publication in the journal Mechanics of Composite Materials (MCM). The award is administered by the UL Foundation from the donation funds of academician Vitauts Tamužs.

 

The patron is known as an outstanding Latvian scientist, academician, as well as the creator of the Latvian School of Composite Materials Mechanics. His works, discoveries and  specialists trained by him continue to promote the development of materials science at an international level.

V. Tamužs completes his studies in the field of mechanics at the prestigious university, Moscow University, with distinction. He continued his journey in Latvia, leading one of the laboratories at the Institute of Polymer Mechanics of the University of Latvia, as well as working with students. Between 1975 and 2000, V. Tamužs was the author or co-author of six monographs, published about 300 articles in various scientific journals, thus leaving a valuable legacy for future researchers in the field of composite materials mechanics.

 

Requirements for receiving the Prize

To receive the prize:

• The prize is awarded for five years, once a year, based on the results of the competition.

• Prize amount is 1000.-EUR, total amount 5000.-EUR.

• The prize is awarded annually to one candidate.

• Scientists/researchers of Latvian universities and scientific institutions can participate in the competition.

• The candidate for the award is the lead author of the respective publication, whose permanent place of work is Latvia. The scientific publication must contain the applicant's reference/indication of belonging to a scientific institution in Latvia.

• The prize applicant submits to the UL Foundation:

• Application;

• A copy of the publication in the relevant annual journal MCM (* .pdf);

• Short CV

• Applications must be sent to e-mail fonds@fonds.lv by 31 January 2022

• A competition is announced each year, in October, to evaluate MCM publications for the following calendar year. Information about this Award is published in the Latvian Academy of Sciences newspaper "Zinātnes vēstnesis" and by sending information to Latvian higher education institutions.

• The evaluation of the prize candidate's work takes place in January of the following calendar year (the works published in all 6 editions of the previous year's MCM journal are evaluated).

 

Prize awarding commission:

• The decision to award the PRIZE is made by a commission. The composition of the commission is recommended by the editorial board of the magazine MCM, and is approved by the Board of the University of Latvia.

The composition of the commission includes:

• Representative of the University of Latvia Foundation;

• Editor-in-Chief of MCM Magazine or Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Magazine;

• At least 2-3 members of the advisory board of the editorial board of the journal;

• The commission evaluates the applicants' applications and makes a decision on awarding the prize.

• If necessary, the commission has the right to invite experts to evaluate the submitted works.

 

Award procedure, reports and control

• The PRIZE will be presented in February.

• The winner receives the prize money by transfer to his/her bank account.
