Students are invited to participate in the virtual Student Deep Science Hackathon

Student Deep Science Hackathon is organized since 2018. The event will bring together the most curious students from Latvian universities interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for already the second time this weekend. Hackathon will be a three-day workshop combined with mentoring sessions and expert support for current students to develop innovative ideas in a virtual environment. Organizers are looking for enthusiasts, engineers, software developers, entrepreneurs, or designers with already formulated ideas as well as those who are ready to work in a team on defined ideas.

“The goal of the Student Deep Science Hackathon is to bring together bright minds with the knowledge or simply interest in STEM fields and show how much there is to do and accomplish in these areas. For example, during the previous hackathon, one of the teams developed prototype gloves with sensors that convert sign language into text on a computer screen. We hope to see such ambitious ideas also this time and to motivate and inspire students to pursue their careers in Deep Science and Technologies,” shares Andris Anspoks, Deputy director for Innovations at Institute of Solid State Physics.

Registration for the hackathon is already open and will close this Friday, October 16, at 3 pm. After registration, participants will be able to join the team formation process facilitated by the Student Deep Science Hackathon organizing team. During the event, participants will receive mentor support, a co-working online environment, and information for commercialization steps. Mentors supporting students include Andris Anspoks, Aleksey Korabovsky, and Roberts Rimša from Institute of Solid State Physics, Andris Ozoliņš from Materize, and Lauma Muižniece from the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia. Hackathon will end on October 18, with teams pitching their ideas to a jury that will select the winners. The winning team will receive tickets to the leading startup and technology conference TechChill in Riga, Latvia, RTU Design Factory will choose a team which will be able to use their facilities to build their prototype, and each team will receive online tickets to STARTUp Day, a startup event in Tartu, Estonia.

Student Deep Science Hackathon will additionally host webinars and workshops that will also be available to those not participating in the hackathon. Expected speakers that will share entrepreneurship, investment, and STEM insights are Ernests Štāls from TechChill, Gatis Mozoļevskis from the Institute of Solid State Physics, and Lauma Muižniece from the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia. The student hackathon is organized by the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia and the University of Latvia.
