For the 13th consecutive year, people around the world and through time zones will be celebrating the Earth Hour, a moment when everyone who cares about environment will turn off electrical appliances and switch off lights. The University of Latvia (UL) invites students, staff, researchers and other associates to refrain from using electricity for an hour on March 28, thus affirming concern about climate change.

Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 28 from 20:30 to 21:30. The University of Latvia will also turn off the lights give prominence to the vital issue of climate change. The number of electrical appliances in each home that will be switched off during the Earth Hour is irrelevant, instead, the focus is on recognizing the necessity for environmentally friendly living. Only a globally shared stand taken by the people to safeguard the future and improve the quality of the environment will help our efforts to reach a new agreement for nature and people in 2020.

Marģers Počs, Director of the UL Department of Infrastructure, states: "The UL strongly supports these activities, aiming to raise public awareness of the environmental challenges posed by human economic activities. Finding solutions to environmental and climate problems is an urgent task that concerns everyone. By joining Earth Hour, the University of Latvia invites everyone to think about the environmental impact, not only in the context of the campaign, but also on a day-to-day basis. The University of Latvia is environmentally responsible and committed to sustainable resource management and mitigation of environmental impact. The university has set up a working group to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable management policy, which is also stipulated by the new European regulations introducing environmentally friendly and sustainable management practices."

By turning off electrical appliances and light, we will assert that addressing environmental issues is crucial and that we want to live in a clean environment. We will declare our support to sustainable future and our care for nature, animals, the planet, our fellow human beings and ourselves.

Let's live greener!
