On September 27, a day before the University of Latvia (UL) celebrated its centenary, “Latvijas Pasts” released two new postage stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of Alma Mater, celebrating the UL, as well as its new and modern buildings.

One of the stamps shows the Romanesque and Byzantine architectural features of the University of Latvia main building at Raiņa bulvāris 19.

Rolands Tjarve, the Head of UL Department of Communication and Innovation and philatelist, opened the postage stamp issue ceremony. “The stamp is a witness to history to remain preserved in collectors' albums and alive in people's everyday use. I believe that when people choose to send the postage stamp to their loved ones, they will surely be delighted at the true beauty of our heritage, “said Mr Tjarve.

Gvido Straube, Acting Rector of the University of Latvia, also congratulated those present: “I am delighted that Latvia, its people and philatelists on the anniversary of the University will receive two new stamps of particular significance. One of them shows the building where we have gathered today. That is our history, and I think that many people, will want to adorn their mail with these stamps.”

At the conclusion of the event, Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of “Latvijas Pasts”, solemnly presented G. Straube with an envelope bearing two UL stamps.

Each of the postage stamps has a different face value – a postage stamp of € 0.57 is intended for sending ordinary Class A letters within the territory of Latvia, whereas a postage stamp of € 0.85 corresponds to the cost of sending ordinary Class A letters to any country outside the European Union. Each stamp has a circulation of 300 000 copies and a special envelope in 1000 copies has been issued with the stamps. The author of the philatelic edition is artist Ģirts Grīva.
