On Thursday, June 6 at the extraordinary meeting of the University of Latvia (UL) Constitutional Assembly Professor Indriķis Muižnieks was approved for the office of the UL Rector for the next four years. Evija Rūsīte, Deputy Director of the Department of Science was elected a senator.
132 of the 244 participants voted in favour of endorsing Professor Indriķis Muižnieks as a Rector.
The Constitutional Assembly commenced with the report of the Chair of the Constitutional Assembly Organization Commission Ansis Grantiņš, the report of the Chair of the Mandate Commission Jānis Pleps and the statement of the quorum by Deputy Chair of the Constitutional Assembly Alise Paula Zīverte. The meeting brought together 248 participants of the Constitutional Assembly.
In the debate on the agenda of the Constitutional Assembly, the floor was given to Professor Malgožata Raščevska, Professor Valdis Folkmanis, Professor Sandris Lācis, Professor Mārcis Auzinš, Professor Andrejs Ērglis, Professor Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga, Associate Professor Uldis Kondratovičs and Professor Kaspars Tāre.
Subsequently, an open vote was held on the Rules of Procedure of the Constitutional Assembly, in which those present decided to support the proposed rules of procedure.
“I hope that the result of today's election will be positive to yield confidence and stability. My particular gratitude is extended to those colleagues who supported me in the elections and afterward. I also thank my rival and his supporters, because the discussions have brought clear perspectives regarding the matters to take into account and to learn from in future. I believe that we, as well as our opponents are UL patriots and able to work together for the benefit of the University and the state. I am convinced that contradictions and discussions will make us stronger,” said Indriķis Muižnieks.
Professor Muižnieks also announced that positive news from the Procurement Commission confirm that in the near future the University of Latvia would be able to conclude an agreement on the implementation of the UL Academic Centre House of Letters project.
The report by Indriķis Muižnieks was followed by a secret ballot on his election for the office of rector and the election of senator representing general personnel.
Participants of the Constitutional Assembly voted for the drafting of new Constitutional Assembly regulations to be elaborated by October 1, 2019.
As already reported, to strengthen the rule of law and the reputation of the university, the Rector of the University of Latvia, Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, on May 29 issued an order to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Constitutional Assembly on June 6.
The extraordinary meeting of the Constitutional Assembly was convened on the basis of the Law “On Institutions of Higher Education”, Section 4, Section 13 (6), 17.1 (1), as well as the Constitutional Assembly Regulations, Paragraph 5.
