In December 2018 the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition team of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia (UL) travelled to Kiev, Ukraine to participate in the competition’s North-East European regional rounds, returning home with the prize for Best Memorials and a ticket to the final rounds in Oxford in April 2019.

The members of this year’s team are bachelor level students from the UL Faculty of Law: Anna Patrīcija Mālere, Gunvaldis Leitens, Ieva Šņepste and Maira Pužule, coached by associate professor Artūrs Kučs and a member of last year’s team – Emīls Jonins. This year’s Competition Case concerns the widely debated and growing problem of fake news and hate speech online. The participants argue over the extent of liability of Internet Intermediaries, the social effects of false and hateful online speech, including the right to be forgotten of individuals affected by it, and the right approaches to dealing with this problem. After the challenges presented at the Regional rounds and the valuable lessons learned, the UL team is ready to prepare for what awaits them in Oxford.
