On November 29, the highest award of Latvian Academy of Sciences – the Grand Medal, as well as Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation prize were conferred upon the Full Member of LAS, Professor of the UL Faculty of Medicine Vija Zaiga Kluša and the Full Member of LAS, Professor of the UL Faculty of Law Kalvis Torgāns.

Dr. habil. med. Vija Zaiga Kluša received the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal in honour of her creative achievements in pharmacology, higher education and work of merit in advancement of Latvian Academy of Sciences. Dr. habil. iur. Kalvis Torgāns received the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal to celebrate his work in establishment of modern school of civil rights in Latvian legal science and outstanding contribution to implementing theoretical cognitions in practice. The President of LAS Ojārs Spārītis in his address to Autumn General Meeting of LAS emphasised that the LAS tribute to the centenary of the state is the nominees for the highest recognition  Grand Medal, adding that in the work of the University of Latvia professor and academician Kalvis Torgāns the highest recognition is expressed with regard to his responsibility toward the Latvian Academy of Sciences, spirit of fellowship, helpfulness and esteem devoted by him as a person of high intelligence to the intellectual elite of the state, actually honouring the symbol of statehood. Pharmacologist Vija Zaiga Kluša is a remarkable representative of regenerative medicine in science of Latvia. Today, when intensive research in regenerative medicine takes place worldwide, the studies implemented by Vija Zaiga Kluša and her colleagues advance Latvia as an internationally discernible player in this field. Within the five years from 2014 to 2018, Boris and un Ināra Teterev Foundation has provided a support to the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal – the highest award conferred by LAS to Latvian and foreign scientists to celebrate their outstanding creative achievements.
