UL receives a donation of 250 thousand euros for the development of natural, medicine and health sciences

"Mikrotīkls" Ltd. is a Latvian company that produces computer network equipment. It’s core products are wireless devices and routers. Since 2015, the University of Latvia has received four donations of 2 million euro (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018) in total from the patron SIA “Mikrotīkls”, which are also dedicated to the development of natural science, medicine and health sciences. The UL Foundation administers these donations, as well as follows the development of projects. ““Mikrotīkls” Ltd. donations have fundamentally opened up new opportunities for researchers in UL's natural, medical and health sciences to realize their scientific ambitions. The UL Foundation is pleased with the achievements of the researchers and the existing cooperation with the patron,” says Laila Kundzina, executive director of the UL Foundation. Thanks to the previous donations of "Mikrotīkls" Ltd., the researchers and academic staff of the University of Latvia have implemented 16 large projects, including the first UL academic expedition to the Antarctic, creation of the experimental crystal-growing laboratory equipment, and publishing the book within the framework of an interdisciplinary study "Oldest inhabitants in the territory of Latvia. Where did we come from? ", developing a method for early diagnosis of kidney tumors, several projects for improving the study and research environment –  IT workshops, improving infrastructure availability in the Physics Department, a modern European-level computer science study program, etc. In addition, 17 long-term projects in various fields are ongoing: the UL House of Nature has the first vision ergonomics office in the Baltics, where visual experts perform unique visual ergonomics studies; Science, mathematics and programming school "Prātnieku laboratorija" program is being developed for students from grades 4 -7;  are being tracked and characterized tumor-resistant microcells formation processes; continues further research and international collaboration with cardiologists to reduce cardiovascular mortality in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease in the perioperative period, are being examined in detail the micro combatants in nature in order to create an organic compounding nanoreactor, and grants are also paid to doctoral students in natural, medical and health sciences, etc.
