The University of Latvia (UL) continues to enhance its research capacity and international competitiveness by announcing a competition for three tenured professorships – in the industrial quantum technology (the fields of physics and astronomy), in the data science and mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence (the field of mathematics, the subfield of discrete mathematics and mathematical informatics), as well as the artificial intelligence, economics and society (in the field of economics and business).

The application deadline for the first two positions is 18 May 2025, and for the tenured professorship in artificial intelligence, economics and society – until 31 August 2025.

The internationally announced vacancies reflect the strategic direction of the University of Latvia towards scientific excellence and international recognition. The University purposefully develops the fields with high potential for interdisciplinary and social contribution – including the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in the economy and society, the development of quantum technologies with industrial applications, as well as theoretical knowledge intensive approaches in data science. The development of these areas significantly complements the excellence of the University of Latvia in the directions of its strategic specialization.

Tenured professors are expected to establish and lead research groups, conduct high-quality scientific research and publish results, actively implement fundraising for research and engage in student training, as well as promote research-based collaboration with the public sector.

Applicants must hold a doctorate in science, demonstrate internationally recognized research performance, experience in organizational work and team leadership over the past six years, and English language skills at least at level C1. Excellence in pedagogical or professional activities and the ability to strategically manage research are an asset.

The remuneration – from 5600 euro per month (gross) for an associate tenured professor and from 7000 euro (gross) for a tenured professor, and the positions are provided with the initial and annual research funding.

Detailed information about vacancies, requirements and documents to be submitted with application is available on the UL website www.lu.lv, the State Employment Agency portal www.nva.gov.lv, as well as on the international researcher vacancy platform Euraxess.

The University of Latvia already has seven tenured professors – in medicine, physics, computing, linguistics, philosophy, social sciences and digital humanities. A tenured professor in chemistry is soon to take the office. The University continues to develop this framework for academic excellence by introducing an internationally recognized tenure system in Latvia. This system ensures that elected academic staff – associate professors or professors – have consistent funding for their own and their team’s work in the long-term perspective.
