CONFERENCE
This year’s symposium “Morality and the Cognitive Sciences” will focus on current research into cognitive sciences and their relevance to a philosophical theory of morality. There has been considerable interest recently in empirical approaches to the study of morality: What are the biological, cultural and psychological factors that explain the shape of our moral judgments, norms and practices? The speakers will be the world’s leading experts and their lectures will be of use to a wide audience.
With the official opening on May 6, 2011 at 10.00 in the Small Assembly Hall of UL (19 Raina Boulevard), Professor Jesse Prinz, the City University of New York, USA, will address the audience by public opening keynote lecture in English “Sentimentalism Naturalized”. Jesse Prinz is known internationally for his significant research in moral psychology.
The conference will bring together cognitive scientists from the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain and other countries. Among invited speakers are Michael Bishop, Professor of epistemology and philosophy of mind at Florida State University, USA, and Edouard Machery, researcher in experimental philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, USA.
On May 8, 2011 at 17.15 a notable Professor Stephen Stich, Rutgers University, USA, will give the closing keynote lecture “The Evolution of Morality?” Stephen Stich is the author of many profound works, for example, “From Folk Psychology to Cognitive Science: The Case Against Belief” (1983), “Deconstructing the Mind” (1996) and “Mindreading” (2003). He is widely known for his contribution to philosophy of mind, epistemology and moral psychology as well.

The Centre for Cognitive Sciences and Semantics of the UL, Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 2005 and deals with interdisciplinary studies, organising conferences, summer schools, symposia and other activities.
