In the academic year 2011/ 2012, the total number of students enrolled at the University of Latvia (UL) comprises 17,790, of which 403 are foreign nationals from 56 countries worldwide.

Of the 403 (235 men and 168 women) foreign students, 234 have opted for a degree or qualification in Bachelor, Master, Doctoral or Residency study programmes, while 169 are visiting students at the UL. Majority of foreign students are from Germany (87 students), Spain (29 students) and Italy (26 students). Also, more than 10 students have come from Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Russia, Montenegro and France. Also, there is one foreign student from each of the following countries: Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Mauritius, Moldova, Nigeria, Slovakia, Hungary and Kosovo. Most of the foreign students have chosen the Higher Professional Study programme “Medicine” (86 students), Residency study programme “Medicine” (44 students) and the Doctoral study programme “Business Administration” (43 students). If comparing the number of students wishing to complete the entire study programme and obtain relevant degree or qualification, 148 foreign students gained admission to the UL as at 1 October 2010. While this year the number of such students has increased by 86 and accounted for 234 as at 1 October 2011.
