For the fourth time the Portuguese Embassy in Latvia, the Camões Institute (Instituto Camões, Portugal) and the University of Latvia in cooperation with UL “Radio NABA” the music club NABAKLUB are organizing a screening of Portuguese films on May 25 - 31, 2011 at NABAKLAB (12 Meierovics Boulevard). This cycle includes 4 feature films and two documentary films.

The film cycle opening night will be on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 19.00 at NABAKLAB. The first film to be shown is Carlos Saura's documentary - musical "Fados" (2007). This film is offered by the Camões Institute for Fado’s music style candidature to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity programme. The second day – May 29, 2011 offers João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata’s short film China, China” at 19.00 and Teresa Prata’s film “Sleepwalking Land” (2007) at 19.20. “Sleepwalking Land” is based on a novel of the same name by Mia Couto, a Mozambican writer. The third day – May 30, 2011, at 19.00 gains insight into the history of Portuguese cinema including the Portuguese popular classic work by the director Chianca de Garcia – a feature film The Town of the White Clothes” (1938). On the last day of the film cycle, May 31, 2011, at 19.00 the screening of the director João Salaviza’s short film “Arena” will take place. “Arena” has won the Palme d’Or for the best short film at the Cannes Film Festival 2009 ever for Portuguese films. Jorge Pelicano’s documentary Are There Still Any Shepherds?” (2006) will be the closing film and starts at 19.15. All the screenings will take place at NABAKLAB (12 Meierovics Boulevard). The films will be with subtitles in English without Latvian translations. The entrance is free.
