In honour of the University of Latvia’s 90th anniversary, the Bank of Latvia has released a special silver anniversary coin “Latvia’s University”. The coin, which entered into circulation on August 24th, was designed by the artist Guntars Sietiņš. His designed was then shaped into a plaster model by the sculptor Jānis Strupulis.

The University of Latvia, the country’s largest institute of higher education and its only classical university, is only one year older than Latvia, and on September 28th this year will celebrate its 90th anniversary. The science historian, Jānis Stradiņš, stressed that “the formation of the university enabled a large number of Latvian scientists and science-oriented people who had previously been scattered abroad to gather together. It also made possible the training of a new generation of Latvian scientists and a start to be made on the development of Latvian scientific terminology in a variety of spheres."

In order to mark the beginning of the anniversary month, on September 7th the president of the Bank of Latvia, Ilmārs Rimšēvičs, will present the special coin to Professor Mārcis Auziņs, the rector of the university.

The front of the coin features the seal of the university, whereas the reverse side shows the main building of the university with a symbol of wisdom in the foreground; namely, an owl sitting on books. Also included is a rose flower – a dedication to students of the fairer gender.

The coin is expected to be of interest not only to collectors, but also to the many people whose lives are in some way connected to the university.

The silver one-lat coin “Latvia’s University” is legal tender throughout the Republic of Latvia. The coin will be available for purchase at the Bank of Latvia, the University of Latvia, as well as banks, souvenir shops, and jewelry stores. The price for one coin from the Bank of Latvia is 23.10 Lats.
