Riga Summer School 2017 will focus on media and information literacy

The seventh edition of the Riga Summer School will feature lectures and workshops about different aspects of media and information literacy, as well as provide an opportunity for students to work in small creative teams to research and capture media and information literacy initiatives in Latvia on video. Different Latvian experts and organizations have agreed to guide the students in their efforts, for instance, the Latvian Radio, Radio Pieci, the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence, National Library of Latvia, Ministry of Culture, UNESCO Latvian National Committee, NATO Strategic Communication Centre of Excellence, Draugiem.lv, and others. The summer school will offer lectures and workshops by faculty members of the Communication Studies Department Guna Spurava, Līva Brice, Marita Zitmane and Laura Ardava. Invited independent experts Dmitrijs Ščegoļevs and Pēteris Sudakovs will lead video production workshops and help students to finalize their short films, which will be premiered at the closing ceremony on August 12 at 19:00 at the Goethe Institute in Riga. The entrance to the event on August 12 is free, and everyone is welcome. Riga Summer School this year will welcome students from Austria, Italy, Germany, Russia, France, Hungary, Estonia, China, Nepal, Poland, United Kingdom and Latvia. Besides lectures and fieldwork, students will also enjoy a rich cultural and social program. Their first event will be the opening picnic at the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia on the evening of August 1. The Riga Summer School takes place in the Latvian capital from August 1 – 13, 2017.
