“I am very pleased that we have arrived at this solution ensuring independence for the School while at the same time guaranteeing for the students the high academic standard of SSE, as the Stockholm School will be represented on the council of the foundation,” Lars Bergman, President of SSE, expressed his satisfaction. SSE will continue to monitor the quality of the studies, and an agreement has also been signed for the continued use of the SSE brand. The SSE Riga Alumni Association has already demonstrated its support for the School by, for example, raising funds for first-year student scholarships. In 2010, alumni have donated EUR 56,450 in order to award one-year tuition scholarships to 22 first-year students at the School.
“The Association also has intangible ways of supporting the School, such as through the use of the alumni network. Guest lecturers are sought for specific courses, internship places are provided to students, and assistance is given in the strategic planning of the School’s operations. The SSE Riga Alumni Association serves as a third guarantor of quality in the management of the School, as there is no other representative with more motivation to ensure that the academic standard and the prestige of the School’s degrees is not only maintained but is enhanced as well,” explained Raimonds Kulbergs, President of the SSE Riga Alumni Association.
“The new structure will guarantee the long-term growth of the School. I am very grateful for the support provided by the alumni of the School and the other supporters. We are now facing the challenge of raising additional funding from Baltic and international sources to avoid having to increase tuition fees in future and to ensure that the best students from the Baltic states study at the School,” said Anders Paalzow, Rector of SSE Riga. The main sources of funding for SSE Riga will be income from tuition for the bachelor’s and master’s programmes and income from further education for executives. The Latvian State has contributed LVL 501,947 towards the development of SSE Riga for the next two years. The future development of the School will also have the financial support of the Swedish banks which actively operate in the Baltic countries, i.e. Nordea, SEB and Swedbank, as well as the Johan Björkman Foundation. Continued assistance will be provided by the long-standing supporters: TeliaSonera, the Anne-Marie/Gustaf Anders Foundation, etc. Whereas the Swedish government will support the School by providing academic scholarships that will be available to students from all countries not represented in the European Union and Eastern European countries. SSE Riga offers two accredited study programmes: a three-year bachelor’s programme in Economics and Business and Executive MBA, a two-year professional master’s programme. Every year, 120 students are admitted to the bachelor’s programme and 25 students enrol in the master’s programme. Tuition is charged, and instruction is in English. Besides the student loans guaranteed by the government and the alumni, students have access to other types of financial support, such as the Alumni Association Scholarships for first-year students. SSE Riga was instituted by a treaty concluded on June 30, 1993 by the Latvian government, represented by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Stockholm School of Economics, on behalf of the Swedish government.
