On the night of February 6th, students from the faculty of physics and mathematics ventured onto the frozen river Daugava between Akmens bridge and Dzelzcela bridge to express their shock and incomprehension at the 40% cut in government funding for higher education. Using peat, which they spread onto the ice, they formed the inscription “- 40%?”

This huge cut in the budget applies not only to higher education and universities, but also to those sciences which are closely related to these universities. Consequently, those suffering from this cut in financing include scientific institutions and those researchers who work in them. The cuts will also have a detrimental effect on teaching staff and students who gain their experience in these institutions, carrying out scientific research and working on their bachelor’s, master’s, or doctor’s dissertations.
