Presentation of the Estonian Human Development Report 2010/2011 “Baltic Way(s) of Human Development. Twenty Years On” will be held on September 20th at 11.00 AM, on the premises of University of Latvia – Small Hall, Raina Blvd. 19, Riga.
This Human Development Report is unique in many ways. The report will reach the public at a time when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the reappearance of the free Baltic states on the world map. It is a time when all three countries have begun to reorient towards a new social model that involves exploring the sustainability of covering social and education-related costs in addition to focusing on economic capability. This is where Baltic countries could forge its own path, taking into account the geopolitical transitions and population changes of the coming century. The main objective of this report is not to rank countries, but to prove that despite all the hardship and naysayers, the three countries have become European countries through persistent work and effort.
The presentation will be carried out by professor Marju Lauristin, the editor-in-chief of the Report and distinguished scientists from Estonia and Latvia, who will introduce the report. Unlike previous reports, the Estonian Human Development Report 2010/2011 contains analysis by experts and social scientists from Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, etc. This contribution gives the Report an international perspective of the development of the three Baltic countries over the past twenty years.
The presentation will be held in English.
