The Exhibition Haapsalu in the Olden Days was launched at the Academic Library of the University of Latvia (UL) on June 2, 2011. It was put together by Lääne County Museum (Estonia).

Attendants of the Exhibition opening were welcomed by Mati Vaarmann, Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Latvia, Mārcis Auziņš, Rector of the UL, Urmas Sukles, Chairman of Haapsalu City Council, Ülo Kalmes, Director of Lääne County Museum, and Venta Kocere, Director of the Academic Library of the UL.

The photo collection of Lääne County Museum splendidly portrays the urban life of Haapsalu and its residents over the period of more than a hundred years. Starting from the 1880’s, professional photographers worked not only at photo salons, but also went outdoors to take photos of the sights of Haapsalu, mainly intended for holidaymakers and city guests. The city’s popular attractions, such as Kuursaal at the Grand Promenade and the ornate railway station building, were mostly featured in the photos. At the end of the 19th century, several amateur photographers joined Haapsalu photo scene, essentially focusing on family members and domestic life. There are glass negatives and stereo images preserved that are nowadays only seen in museums. Also such photographers as Theodor Haack, Aleksander Tavast, Aleksander Avik and others were working in Haapsalu.

In the 1920–1930’s, photography became a hobby for the entire society. Professional photographers mainly preferred the sunlit promenade where various concerts and other events took place. During that time, photographer Johannes Grünthal (Kalda), who started working already in the time of Tsar Nicholas II, took numerous pictures of the city’s sights. Many fascinating photos were taken in the early 20th century by Harald Dampf and Johannes Waldmann.

The Exhibition was set up in 2009 and marks the 80th anniversary of Lääne County Museum and the 730th anniversary of Haapsalu City.

The captivating musical performance by the UL Brass Band also enriched the opening event.

The Exhibition organized in cooperation with the Estonian Embassy to Latvia will be open until July 15, 2011.
