On 24th of March, on the eve of Commemoration Day of the Victims of Communist Terror, in the UL Great Hall at 7 p.m. everyone is welcome to listen to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem.

The performers are soloists Ance Purmale (soprano), Laura Grecka (mezzo-soprano), Jānis Kurševs (tenor) and Deniss Trans (bass-baritone), as well as Holland Concert Choir, organist Wim Loef from the Netherlands and the University of Latvia’s chamber orchestra, led by conductor from the Netherlands Nico Philipp Hovius. Friendship and collaboration between Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA) and musicians from the University in Heerlen began in October, 2008, when JVLMA was visited by a group of culture tourists, with some singers of the Dutch concert choir among them, from the Netherlands. The concert will feature The Requiem – W.A. Mozart's final, unfinished masterpiece that has become an identifying symbol for the composer’s work. It is full of pain and shrouded in dark premonitions, nevertheless, it continues to tower above like a cathedral and goes out as a prayer for peace and forgiveness. The JVLMA orchestra being engaged in another study project, the University of Latvia’s chamber orchestra will participate in the rendition of The Requiem. The soloists are very promising new artists - Laura Grecka, Ance Purmale, Deniss Trans and Jānis Kurševs. This project is not commercial, but based on voluntary collaboration – each party contributes by providing the premises or human resources. The Dutch choir cover their own expenses; the University of Latvia participates in the project with its chamber orchestra and by offering the University Great Hall as the concert location, but the JVLMA participates with its soloists and several members of the orchestra and choir for whom it comprises study praxis. The admission to the concert is FREE. Translated by students of the professional study programme Translator of the University of Latvia.
