
In the season 2008-2009, UL women’s basketball team participated in the first competition of Women’s Basketball League and won the honourable third place. The team also got the second place among the university teams of Latvia and a gold medal in the international SELL Student Games. Thus, in the season 2009-2010 UL will compete in Latvian Women’s Basketball League, the highest league in Latvia, and is ready to defend the name of the University of Latvia.
The most serious addition to the team is three players from Turība, among them the Latvian champion (2006) and point guard Zane Lapsiņa, power forward player Anete Vorma and centre player Inese Bundule. Inna Leja and her colleagues Justīne Sidorenko and Zane Pavariņa all used to play in U-18, and come from Ventspils. There are several girls coming from UL- related Kolibri club; they are Lāsma Bērziņa, Līga Vente and Ruta Pētersone. And Māra Balode is the oldest team member.
The coach of the UL women’s team, Arkādijs Makarenko, has been in this position for two years already.
Latvijas Universitāte has regained its place in the major league after a year’s break. The unit has participated in thirteen of fourteen LWBL championships (1996-2008) achieving its best results at the turn of the century. In 1999 and 2000, Universitātes Sports finished in the second place, while in 1997 it gained the third position. In recent years, the team was at the bottom in the overall ranking, taking the last place in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
