The globally known researcher and green economics expert Katherine Richardson will appear under the framework of the presidential lecture series “Readings by World Leaders” at 10:30 AM in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia on Tuesday, February 15.

Professor Richardson has been invited to take part in the series by the Presidential Chancery and the University of Latvia, and her topic will be “Green Growth: The Key to Success in Economic Recovery in an Era of Global Environmental Resource Shortages. Denmark’s New Energy Strategy.”

Katherine Richardson chairs Denmark’s Climate Commission, which has prepared a report on how the country can shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources by the year 2050. Denmark’s government has undertaken to prepare a detailed plan of action by the beginning of next year on implementing the recommendations of the Climate Commission. The report, when read in tandem with the knowledge of other experts in the world, will enable a true scientific revolution – perhaps one which will prove to be comparable to the one caused by Darwin’s theory of evolution.

The people of Denmark are bound and determined to ensure economic development, and this is an outstanding opportunity for Latvia to learn about this experience, make use of it, and create proper conditions for economic growth in Latvia, too.

This lecture will be of use to everyone who is interested in green economics and ideas related to the implementation of policies related to climate change. We hope that the event will be attended by policy organisers, leaders and specialists from state and private sector institutions, experts, students and media representatives who are interested in renewable energy resources and their use in ensuring economic growth.

Professor Richardson will deliver her lecture in English. The full text of the Climate Commission’s report can be found here.

About the Presidential Lecture Series

The presidential lecture series “Readings by World Leaders” was established at the suggestion of President Valdis Zatlers during the celebration of the University of Latvia’s 90th anniversary. The aim of the lecture series is to allow Latvian scholars, members of the intelligentsia, and representatives of the media to attend lectures delivered by globally distinguished representatives of a variety of sectors – people who can offer a broader view of global issues of an economic, political and social nature, encouraging audiences to think about the further development of relevant processes.
The idea of the lecture series occurred to the President as he was meeting with global leaders – movers and shakers in the world’s political, economic and social processes, as well as opinion leaders. People who have delivered lectures at the President’s invitation thus far have included the founder of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Klaus Schwab, the philanthropist and businessman John Hope Bryant, who is also the deputy chairman of the US President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability, the consultant, writer and creative businessman John Newbigin, and a senior newsreader from the BBC, Nik Gowing.

The lecture will be broadcast online in UL portal.
