Seminar about data management to take place at University of Latvia on October 27

On Friday, October 27, at 12:00, during the International Open Access Week, the National Open Access Department will organize a practical seminar “Open Research Data and Data Management” at the UL Academic Centre of Natural Sciences in Riga, Jelgavas iela 1, room 107. It will be broadcasted live at 12:00.
The seminar will feature presentations and practical advice about the research data management by the experts of Netherlands’ organization Data Archiving and Networking Services (DANS) Dr. Marjan Grootveld and Elly Dijk, as well as the systems analyst of the Project Management Division at the Public Services Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Toms Ceļmillers.
The experts will introduce current and global tendencies of the science advancement, research data accessibility and importance regarding the development of science. Audience will also have the chance to ascertain what is data management, and establish its connection with the research process cycle. It will also be possible to share some research data.
Furthermore, everyone will have an opportunity to gain an insight into better research data management examples. Different processes of the data management will be available for sampling in practice, and the participants are invited to take along their portable computers. Everyone will be able to obtain the information about the Latvian Open Data portal containing publications of the governmental institutions or organizations.
DANS has been established in the Netherlands, collaborating with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). It is one of the biggest and more experienced open access providers of data archiving and research data in Europe. It promotes permanent access to the digital research data, encourages the researchers to archive and reuse the data, and contributes to the regular development of the global scientific infrastructure.
\Dr. Marjan Grootveld is the Senior Policy Officer working in the sphere of data archiving and networked services. In her career, M. Grootveld has concentrated on enabling the re-use of knowledge, information, and data – from the improvement of the knowledge management in the company and reducing red tape in the e-Government to sustention of constant data management in academia. M. Grootveld has the experience of organizing academic classes and leading and supporting scientific institutions and research sponsors regarding the policy and practice of the data management. On the international level, the expert educates people in the data archive coalition’s Research Data Netherlands e-course “Essentials 4 Data Support”.
The Senior Policy Advisor Elly Dijk also holds a significant experience educating the scientific community about the data management. E. Dijk is the coordinator of the National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System (NARCIS) and European Open Science Cloud pilot (EOSCpilot) project, and a member of the Current Research Information Systems (euroCRIS) Board.
The systems analyst of the Project Management Division at the Public Services Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Toms Ceļmillers has been involved in the open data issues on all levels – from the European Union’s acquisition of the directive to solving technical problems during the development of the open data portal. Currently, T. Ceļmillers contributes to creating a good open data publishing practice in Latvia.
The seminar “Open Research Data and Data Management” is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the personnel, researchers, doctorate students, heads of the research projects and coordinators, research policy creators and administrators, IT specialists, librarians, data experts, and data repository managers.
