On May 25, 2011 the Constitutional Assembly of the University of Latvia will elect the next UL Rector to lead the biggest Latvian university for the subsequent four years. The candidates for the Rector’s position are Professor Marcis Auzins and Professor Inta Brikse.
Professor Inta Brikse is nominated for the Rector’s position by the UL Student Council and Faculty of Social Sciences. Professor Marcis Auzins is nominated for the same position by Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine, UL Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Faculty of Economics and Management, UL Institute of Physics and UL Institute of Solid State Physics.
The Rector is elected for four years. The Rector’s elections are conducted by secret ballot. The candidate is considered elected if received more than a half of the votes from UL Constitutional Assembly participants present and participating in the vote.
The previous elections of the UL Rector took place in 2007, when 213 votes by the UL Constitutional Assembly participants were given to Professor Marcis Auzins.
