On February 1, 2012, the University of Latvia has launched the second project of the European Social Fund – „Support for Doctoral Studies at the University of Latvia – 2”. It will allow doctoral students and applicants for a scientific degree to receive grants in the total amount of more than 950,000 LVL.

This support is intended for all educational thematic groups. Allocation of special purpose grants will increase the number of students on the doctoral level and those who obtain a doctoral degree. The University of Latvia offers 24 doctoral study programmes in a variety of disciplines, from philology and sociology to physics and medicine. The Project is being carried out as part of the Action Programme Annex, sub-activity 1.1.2.1.2.  “Support for Doctoral Study Programme Implementation. The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia has approved a total sum of 954,064 LVL for the time period February, 2012 – February, 2014. In 24 months, the doctoral students and applicants for a scientific degree in any full-time or part-time studies, either state- or self-funded, will have a chance of receiving financial support based on competition results. Thus, grants will be allocated to 78 doctoral students and applicants for a scientific degree; at least 80 per cent of them will have obtained a doctoral scientific degree by August 31, 2015. Those obtaining their PhDs within the Project will expand the academic staff of the University of Latvia considerably, thus improving the study quality, and attracting new students and additional financing of science. The first allocation of special purpose grants among applicants for a doctoral scientific degree has been completed. Those applicants who had submitted their applications but were not supported have the right to participate in further competitions.
