The University of Latvia in cooperation with the University of Tartu offer a summer programme “After the Empire: the Collapse of Communism and Beyond”.

The aim of this programme is to introduce the crucial changes in two Baltic societies, brought up by the collapse of communism. The programme will introduce the challenges and achievements of social, economic and political reforms and their past, present and future impacts on local as well as on international scale. Students will learn of state-of-the-art achievements generated by quick and efficient transformation from state-controlled economic system into free market economy. Riga, Latvia

Latvia: Society, Politics and Economy
The programme introduces the complex factors influencing contemporary Latvian social and economic environment. The lectures will address the main aspects of Latvian culture and politics from historical and comparative perspective. Visits to small, medium and large size companies enable to develop a critical understanding of Latvia’s dynamic business climate, which is dependent upon the influences from neighbouring economic systems in Russia, Scandinavia and Central Europe. Programme fee: 1985 EUR Apply online Programme fee includes tuition, accommodation with breakfast, transportation during the programme between the countries (Latvia-Estonia) and cities, cost of the study visits, cultural and social programme and the services of the host university. Students are responsible for their travel from their home country to Riga and from Tallinn/Tartu to their home country. Payment deadline: June 1, 2016. Application deadline: May 20, 2016 Two weeks prior to the start of the programme all participants will be forwarded readings which they need to work through by the start of the programme. This contains both referrals to materials available online and/or copies of materials as an attachment. The programme will be supervised by Professor Andrey Makarychev (University of Tartu) who has the responsibility of assessing the performance of each student and giving the final grade. Assessment is based on the accomplishment of the study goals of the programme: knowledge of the subject matter on the basis of readings, active participation in the class and group work, quality of the essay which needs to be sent in by e-mail at least within two weeks after the end of the programme. Upon successful completion the participants will receive the Certificate of Completion and an Academic Transcript of the University of Tartu. For further inquiries, please contact:
