For the third time the Portuguese Embassy in Latvia, the Camões Institute (Instituto Camões, Portugal) and the University of Latvia are organizing a screening of Portuguese films, February 17- 25, at UL Small Hall. This cycle includes 5 feature films and one documentary film. The screenings are free of charge.

The film cycle opening night will be on Wednesday, February 17, at 6 pm in the University Small Hall, Raiņa Boulevard 19. The first film to be shown is José Fonseca e Costa’s “Five Days, Five Nights” (Cinco Dias, Cinco Noites). In order to make the film cycle more diverse this year a documentary film by Raquel Freire “The Lady of Chandor” (A Dama de Chandor) is included and will be shown the same day at 8 pm. In 1999 this film won the Best Script Award at the International Ethnographic Film Festival in Belgrade. The second day, February 19, at 6 pm offers Luís Filipe Rocha’s film “Night Passage” (A Passagem da Noite), the lead actress of the film deserves the prize for the best performance. At 8 pm the film cycle offers another film by José Fonseca e Costa “The Fascination” (O Fascínio). On the last day of the film cycle, February 25, at 6 pm the screening of the director Marco Martins’ feature film “Alice” will take place. Even though this is the director’s first film, it has already participated in Portuguese as well as international festivals and contests and has won awards for best film and best performance by an actor and an actress. The film cycle would not be complete without a feature film by the world renowned director Manoel de Oliveira. Thus, on February 25, the closing film of the cycle will be Manoel de Oliveira’s film “The Letter” (La Lettre) which in 1999 won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The viewing of the film will start at 8 pm. All the screenings will take place at the University Small Hall (Raiņa Boulevard 19). The films will be with English subtitles, but without Latvian translation. The entrance is free.
