On Wednesday, February 3rd, the 74th University of Latvia (UL) Conference was opened with the plenary session “New Challenges: to the University of Latvia, to Latvia, and in the World” in the UL Small Hall, 19 Raina boulevard, with speeches of UL Rector Prof. Indriķis Muižnieks, Prof. Jānis Vucāns and Prof. Zanda Rubene. The session was chaired by Jānis Ikstens, UL Pro-Rector in the field of law and social sciences.

The plenary session was opened by Rector Indriķis Muižnieks, saying that this scientific conference is traditionally the biggest UL conference of the year with more than 1300 academic papers. The Rector emphasized the importance of cooperation and multidisciplinarity in science, bringing up the example of the comprehensive symposium dedicated to clay in the UL Academic Centre of Natural Sciences within the 74th UL Conference. The bulk of his speech was dedicated to scientific resources and challenges in their management. Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity to depoliticize science and innovation policy.

Jānis Vucāns, chairman of the Education, Culture and Science Committee of the 12th Saeima, gave the report “Challenges in Latvian education system’, whereas UL professor Zanda Rubene reported on “Science of Education at the University of Latvia: research framework and perspectives”. The plenary session was chaired by Jānis Ikstens, UL pro-rector in the field of law and social sciences.

Photos The annual UL conference takes place from January 25 until mid-March and includes various science disciplines. The first section session “History of Sciences and Museology” took place on January 25th. The 74th UL conference is organized in 129 section sessions and 10 plenary sessions. There will be an exhibition of creative works as well. The annual UL scientific conference is organized to ensure the exchange of research results, ideas and opinions among scientists, university lecturers, students and guests. It is an integral part of scientific work. UL scientific conferences have been taking place since 1945. Everyone interested is welcome to join and attend conference events.
