On November 16, 2010 at 10:30 in the meeting room of the UL Senate (Raina Blvd. 19) a cooperation agreement between the UL and Microsoft Education Alliance was signed. Its aim is to promote education quality and innovations, to create new work places and opportunities and to compensate for lack of qualified staff by upgrading technologies, and by increasing their accessibility and effectiveness.
The agreement was signed by the UL Science Pro-rector, Professor Indrikis Muiznieks, UL Chancellor Gundars Berzins, Microsoft President of Central and Eastern Europe Don Grantham and Microsoft Director for the Baltic region Mindaugas Glodas.
“The University of Latvia during its existence has become one of the symbols of our independence and national self-confidence. The University of Latvia has always been a powerful instrument that can help to overcome current difficulties and to give new opportunities for Latvia. Undoubtedly, the University is currently one of the leading education and science institutions in the Baltic States, but our aim is to take a stable position among the most prominent science and education centres in Europe. This cooperation agreement is a good way how to develop and fully use the potential of our University,” said the UL Rector Professor, Marcis Auzins.
“Strong technology infrastructure means that communities can attract local, regional an international entrepreneurs and investors, who would facilitate the economic growth and international competitiveness, as well as promote new job creation and personal development. Besides, it is of great importance that students can master their skills in technologies to become proficient technology users. This is a long-term contract, which helps to create possibilities for internationally competitive higher education in Latvia. We are gratified that we can participate in education development process, by promoting innovations and professional development, as well as by providing more diverse education opportunities,” said Don Grantham.
By signing the cooperation agreement, the Parties agreed to promote further development of study programmes, to provide access to the most updated technologies for the UL staff and students for work, research and education purposes, as well as to promote the UL scientific work.
Within the cooperation agreement, Microsoft provides rental licence of the software with an additional privilege set and beneficial pricing policy for the licensing of the UL workstations. This cooperation also gives an opportunity to establish simple and easy free electronic communication system among all the users – students, staff, professors and graduates that would correspond to the respective brand name of the University.
In addition, the contract allows students, administrative and teaching staff to acquire, evaluate and use Microsoft products for academic purposes. As stated in the contract, Microsoft specialists will share their experience and suggestions to implement the technologies in the University. The agreement forms the basis for a long-term partnership.
